A tuition-free charter school, Hmong College Prep Academy, also known as HCPA, is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Founded in 2004 by former superintendent Dr. Christianna Mai-Choua Hang, the school bases its academic programming on world cultures and college readiness. Unique in the Twin Cities, the school weaves Hmong culture and language into each grade's college-focused curriculum taught in English with 30% of teachers speaking Hmong. As a charter school, HCPA offers all-day kindergarten through college-prep senior high. Free bus service is also available for all students in Minneapolis, Saint Paul and select suburbs. The bus services also have policies in place to ensure every child gets home safely. Students will enjoy unique cultural inclusions, like specialty home-cooked meals offered for both breakfast and lunch. They can also participate in the bass fishing club, concert band, concert choir, school plays and so much more. For time outside of school, dances are a popular event within the community, giving students a chance to dance the night away with their peers. Field trips for all grade levels allow young scholars to learn outside of the classroom. Those looking to gauge their athletic side are in luck, as HCPA offers a variety of sports including soccer, basketball, football and more. Expanded more than five times since its opening in 2004, Hmong College Prep Academy continues to reach forward and help students grow.
