SAISD designed the program for parents to find curriculums and teaching styles best suited for their children. All school district residents are eligible to apply. The school follows constructivism and student-centered learning methods. Although Barkley-Ruiz is not one of the highest-scoring schools, it does boast dramatic student score improvements in reading, math and writing. The school aims to help underserved students rapidly progress with focused teaching and specialized strategies. The school also boasts innovative clubs and fine arts programs, including visual arts, mariachi, Lego club and gardening. The school is named after David Barkley, a World War I veteran who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. José Francisco “Francis” Ruiz, the school’s other namesake, was a San Antonio educator and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
