H. B. Gonzalez Elementary School is a part of the Edgewood Independent School District. The school is named in honor of the late United States Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, an well-known political figure who served the state of Texas for decades. The first school bearing his name was dedicated in 1968. This district’s policy of open enrollment with open boundaries allows students within the district and the greater Bexar County area the greatest selection of institutions from which to choose. In the 2020 – 2021 school year, H. B. Gonzalez enrolled approximately 418 students. There are 28 full-time teachers giving a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1, which is below the national average. Serving pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students, H. B. Gonzalez is a great start to your student’s education. The school’s stated mission is to “empower and prepare leaders to be proactive toward lifelong success”. As the state agency overseeing primary and secondary education, the Texas Education Agency has recognized H. B. Gonzalez as both a “Recognized Campus” and an “Exemplary Campus.” Offering a standard curriculum, H. B. Gonzalez provides courses in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Dual language and gifted and talented programs are also available. To round things out, students can take advantage of extracurricular offerings such as the art club, the chess club and both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, just to name a few.
