Washington Irving Dual Language Academy is a public charter school located on the West Side of San Antonio in the Gardendale neighborhood. This pre-kindergarten through eighth grade school has a student population of just over 400 and is part of the San Antonio ISD school district. Irving academy offers advanced dual-language academic programming in English and Spanish, providing students with a classroom experience that encourages them to become successful biliterate readers and bilingual communicators. Students coming from another dual language elementary program and students who are proficient in both languages are eligible for Irving’s secondary dual language program. Irving Academy had an accountability rating of C during the 2018-2019 school year, which is slightly lower than the district’s average score of B; however, the school excels in its wide variety of after school activities offered. Irving Academy offers extracurricular programming in fine arts, including visual arts, band, elementary music (KG-5), and even Mariachi! They also have a Reading and Yearbook Club. For athletic programming, Irving hosts girls’ soccer, basketball, track, and volleyball and boys’ soccer, basketball, and track. The school also offers gifted programming, special education, speech, and guidance counseling, as well as an after-school program provider until 6 p.m.
