Centrally located in the Avenida Guadalupe neighborhood, J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School is another San Antonio Independent School District institution with a long history. Generations of San Antonians have attended this elementary school since its inception in the 1900s. By 1907, the school was named John Thomas Brackenridge Memorial School to honor the brother of Texas philanthropist George Brackenridge. The building on Guadalupe Street opened in 1978. J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School offers a Head Start program and serves pre-K through sixth grade students. The school also provides bilingual, gifted and talented, and special education programs. Children in Head Start have specialized education and comprehensive social services to optimize future success in kindergarten. Residents’ location on the SAISD district map determines school admission. The school has two after-school sports programs: The Boy’s and Girl’s Club STARS and San Antonio Sports iPlay. Test scores have lagged behind the rest of the district, but the school is dedicated to educating all city children and bringing current students up to grade level.
