Founded in 1971, Pluralistic School One (PS1) is a private, co-ed, independent elementary school for kindergarten through sixth grade students. The school is made up of approximately 210 pupils who attend multi-age classes combining two years and are limited in size to fewer than 25 students. PS1’s student-to-faculty, staff and administration ratio is 5-to-1. The school’s founding value of pluralism is the belief that a community is enriched when individual differences are respected and welcomed, building upon a child’s passions, interests, talents, personal expressions and uniqueness, as highlighted in this quote from A.A. Milne: “The things that make me different are the things that make me.” The PS1 program nurtures children's social-emotional development, creativity and interconnectedness in the school’s community and curriculum. It builds a healthy foundation for character by encouraging children to find their voices and advocate for themselves from a young age. Weekly "circle times" help them become comfortable with communication, public speaking and collaboration. PS1 allocates 19.5 percent of tuition income to financial aid. The school’s award-winning sustainable campus in the heart of Santa Monica offers indoor and outdoor education spaces for each classroom, with service-learning projects at all grade levels. PS1’s aftercare includes enrichment classes and play activities.

Above all the parts of school that were looking for our children, and we really wanted them to feel challenged and part of an inspiring learning community, we are most grateful to our parent community that we have found at PS1. We have made strong and deep lifelong friends too.

Our children are uniquely their own people. PS1 Pluralistic School is an environment that allows them to be themselves, feel good about who they are, and care about others. Their curiosity about the world and how it works is fostered and extended. Parents are kind, down to earth, and this is the community that we feel blessed to have helping us raise our children.

We really wanted to love this school. Administration declined once the original head of school and founder retired. The school lacks in diversity in race and disability. And if your child develops any type of learning disability, the school and teachers are not understanding nor equip to deal with t...

This is an excellent school that fosters young minds so that they feel confident and love learning! We are three years in, and both my kids love going to school, feel engaged and valued, and I have seen their confidence grow year by year. This has also set them up for academic success, with both kid...

Half-way through our third year at PS1, my child is thriving. He happens to be academically-adept with reading and math skills well above grade-level, and the classroom teachers have kept him fully engaged and challenged. He comes home and cannot stop talking about all of the things he is learning a...
