The Santa Monica Montessori School is a private school that teaches children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade with the approach developed by the Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori, based on what is known about children’s cognitive, neurological and emotional development.
Students progress at their own rate through a program of exercises in practical life, math, reading, language, grace and courtesy, science, geography, history, fine arts, humanities, foreign languages, music and education. The focus is on one-on-one coaching, assessment and mentoring versus a rigid daily curriculum in mixed-age classrooms of 12 students on average, where older children are role models for their younger classmates and help them learn.
Classroom equipment allows children to use their hands in the learning process, a kinesthetic system that takes advantage of “muscular memory” to reinforce the skill to be learned. The Santa Monica Montessori School offers TotPot, an artisanal “kid’s kitchen” dedicated to creating and cooking healthy home-style farm-to-pot hot lunches, as well as after-school activities that include classes and labs in computers, art, foreign languages, science and math lab, a study hall, music instruction, team sports and play.

Overall fairly negative. Some nice parents and lovely children but not a very cohesive vibe. We had come from a very tight knit school,in some ways a little anonymity was good at first, but overall a transitional/transient feel and something a little off about the place. Glad to be moving on
