Jane Addams Middle School, or JAMS, is the only Seattle public middle school in the Lake City neighborhood. It is situated across the street from Nathan Hale High School, the secondary school that all of Seattle’s public elementary and middle schools in the Lake City neighborhood flow into. JAMS is a comprehensive middle school and is home to just over 1,000 students. It serves students in grades six through eight and is a newer building that opened in 2014. It was the district’s first new secondary school in 40 years. Students at JAMS are required to take all of the traditional subjects and have a variety of options for elective coursework that suit their interests. JAMS also has a robust athletic department and offers competitive boys and girls sports in Fall, winter, and spring. A JAMS favorite is the school-sponsored co-ed Ultimate Frisbee team during the fall. The music department at JAMS gets a lot of support. There is a volunteer-led, independent organization, Friends of Jane Addams Music, that strives to support excellence and equity in music. The organization raises funds and fosters community partnerships to make sure that all students who wish to play music are able and have the equipment they need. Jane Addams Middle School is named after 1931 Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams (1860-1935) who founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and worked in the United States to help the poor and stop the use of children as industrial laborers.

We had high hopes and had heard great things prior to 2019 from other families. The school has changed drastically since then due to SPS policies, so any review that pre-dates 2019 is no longer accurate. After having two students attend this school, we decided to leave the district. Academically, th...

Some classrooms were extremely HOT, others were too cold. The teachers constantly pick favorites and it’s clear. Teachers have ZERO respect for any of the students, I am a current high schooler at Nathan hale and used to go to JAMS. I got frequently bullied for being Chinese by other POC kids and th...

I had good friends and there are nice people. Not everyone is bad but they seriously need to work on respecting my others and community because it is very toxic based off of my experience.

This school, compared to most others, is disastrous. When you're in the school you don't realize it, but the teachers (with a few exceptions) always scratch the surface of what's being taught and give homework that is laborious but serves no purpose. The teaching is ineffective and isn't interesting...
