Laurel Academy is a private elementary school in the Lake City neighborhood of Seattle. The school serves students from pre-K to fifth grade and has a low teacher-to-student ratio of 1:10
The school day at Laurel Academy runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and before and after-school care is available for an additional fee. The annual tuition to attend Laurel Academy for all grades is $9000.
Laurel Academy states its mission “to enhance our students’ native love of learning so that each student is winning and confident in their studies.” They achieve this in a variety of ways through academics and extra-curricular activities.
Students begin their day with yoga and finish it by doing chores. The school views the latter as character-building and is part of its curriculum as a life skill. Other important parts of the curriculum are daily music classes and weekly art classes. Laurel Academy says art, be it visual, music, dance or theater, is a key component of the curriculum and students engage in this type of expression every day.
As for academics, Laurel Academy teaches math from Primary Mathematics, a curriculum originally created by the Singapore Ministry of Education. This curriculum has been proven to produce some of the top math scholars in the world.
Reading and Writing are taught using a workshop model, and at Laurel Academy, STEM topics are called STEAM, because they integrate art into the mix.
