W.L. Morse School in nearby Sleepy Hollow serves a student population of around 400 in first and second grade. Located near the landmark Old Dutch Reformed Church of Sleepy Hollow, the imposing, two-story building is named for Winfield L. Morse, a longtime educator and local Tarrytown figure. With 40 full-time faculty members and a student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1, W.L. Morse School “provides students with exciting learning opportunities to become critical readers and writers, skilled mathematicians, inquisitive scientists and knowledgeable historians,” according to Principal Torrance Walley. Recent enrichment programs at the school have included a visiting professional dance troupe leading students in an interactive assembly, tracing world dance styles to demonstrate the creation and transformation of hip-hop throughout the world. W.L. Morse School also follows an initiative to embrace the qualities of citizenship, responsibility, honesty, trustworthiness, friendship and perseverance as the pillars of character. Every week, students do their best to embody these ideals while building a solid foundation for their early education.
