GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Overall, my experience at Smithfield High School was well. I had a great connection with many teachers and faculty. The main thing I would like to see change if for the administration to listen to the voices of students more.

Despite being a senior I am fairly new to Smithfield High School (moved here last year). As such my knowledge of the school is fairly limited. Having said that, I feel my biggest issue with the school is the lack of classes (many AP classed must be taken online due to lack of students in the classes) and the mediocre activities (excluding clubs, as those are my favorite thing about Smithfield). For example, our senior field day just had us get a food truck and sit outside.

an overall ok school. primarily rich white folks sharply divided by very poor African Americans. very disconnected or segregated school the black people stick with the black white with the white for the most part. Very few ap courses offered making it low in competition with other high schools. clubs are okay just ran by people trying to use clubs as a way to get a good resume.

This school has completely gone downhill. The admin fail to keep students safe while in the school. Dr. Thornton cares more about increasing his pay than his employees health, or students well being. IOWCS has taken a sharp turn in failing their students.

Some of the best teachers I’ve ever encountered work at the school. Sadly you can tell their morale is extremely low thanks to a vindictive and uncaring superintendent. The school system was warned not to hire this person but insisted on doing so. They are now paying for this with low test scores, l...

I have two daughters at this school, who always felt safe and welcomed. Overall, their teachers were very good, and some were outstanding. I appreciated the support of the administration during the school violence protests that occurred during the school day. Communication was excellent. There are n...

Highly dissatisfied. Our children don't feel safe there or valued as a student. It's over crowded and school is to small and understaffed for the amount of students and issues there.
