Marengo Elementary School started operating in South Pasadena as an eight-room schoolhouse in 1910 and has grown to enroll 750 students. Recognized as a California Distinguished School and a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School, Marengo Elementary is conveniently located in one of South Pasadena’s long-established and leafy residential neighborhoods. Beginning in kindergarten, students can enter a Mandarin dual immersion program, in which 50% of the class is taught in Mandarin and 50% in English. Two dual immersion courses are taught per grade level, with classes composed of half native Mandarin speakers and half non-native speakers. Faculty and staff welcome the Marengo Elementary tradition of ongoing parental involvement, which drives many of the school’s programs. These include science nights, talent shows and holiday programs, including the PTA’s sponsorship of the Lunar New Year celebration, which pays homage to the cultural significance of the holiday. In partnership with the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club, the event offers samples of dim sum, mochi and boba drinks and Chinese Zodiac-themed dances.

GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Our family would like to respond to the review of Ms. Lewis (Wong) that is on this website. This in no way is meant to discount the experience of one individual, but the experience our child had in Ms. Lewis/Wong's class was wonderful. Ms. Lewis showed genuine care for our child, responded to questi...

Our family was at Marengo for six years between kids and it was a mixed experience. Of the 10 teachers my children had, 3 were exceptional, and 6 were excellent. And they gave my children really wonderful experiences with learning and socialization. But 1 of them - Tiffany Wong - was abysmal and her...

My child attended the Pre-K program at Marengo and is currently in Kinder. We have had the best experience at the school. Great teachers that teach the students to love learning. Parent involvement is expected and it's what drives many of the great programs at the school, such as science night, tale...
