While Monterey Hills Elementary School is the smallest of South Pasadena’s three elementary schools, is boasts above-average test scores, academic progress and equity when compared to other schools in the state. Named a California Gold Ribbon School, it recently expanded to two stories and is nestled in a neighborhood that began to boom with mid-20th century development, which caused the school to be built in 1967 to serve the new community. The school has a total enrollment of nearly 700, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 24-to-1. Four classrooms serve each grade level, which include music and performance arts courses in addition to core academics. Two special day classes address specific learning disabilities, and clustered gifted and talented education classes are available for qualified fourth- and fifth-grade students. Integrating its student body into the life of the neighborhood, Monterey Hills hosts bike-riding events on weekends, scout and community meetings and has gardening and campus beautification programs. Starting in kindergarten, students can enter a Spanish dual-immersion program in which 90% of the class is taught in Spanish and 10% in English. As students move up in grades, the ratio of Spanish to English decreases. Half of the class are native English speakers while half are native Spanish speakers.

I was a parent, a PTA Executive Member, and an employee of Monterey Hills Elementary School. So you can say I've seen it all, heard it all. I'm really glad that my child went to this school and that I've been able to see various perspectives on how this school works. My child went to MHS from Kinder...

As a native speaker I do not like the dual immersion program, the Spanish taught is not of a good proficiency. You have a better chance of learning Spanish with a tutor outside the school. We had a bad experience with the 1st grade instructor because of her lack of empathy, bad manners and hostile a...

We have two children attending MHS in the Spanish dual-immersion program and have been very happy with their education. Over the four years we've been at the school, ALL of their teachers have been very engaged, communicative, and supportive when needed. Best of all, our children are excited to go t...
