Sullivan’s Island Elementary School is a Coastal Environment Partial Magnet School. The school is part of the Charleston County School District, and it underwent renovation in 2015. There are approximately 500 students enrolled each year. The school incorporates portable touch tanks that house different water environments within their science labs, and there are different schoolwide coastal environment themes each quarter, with a focus on sustainability. Exploring nearby nature trails, engaging in on-campus gardening, the arts, music and Sphero robotics coding are part of the curriculum, as is a STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, lab. A Spanish exposure program helps children learn a second language. The 74,000-square-foot school building is perched high, overlooking the beaches and ocean. The innovative school’s location at 2014 Mike Perkis Place is one of the state’s most recognized schools. The building’s nature-inspired design goes along with the school’s coastal environmental mission.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

My son is a second year student at SIES. We have been very happy with our child’s experience at SIES and are excited to have our other children attend SIES when they are older. Teachers are supportive, as is the administrative staff, including Principal King. School drop off is a mess and staff seem...

This school would be great if not for the principal. Susan King has to be the most incompetent person I have ever come across. Completely useless. She comes up with the most ridiculous rules, and good luck if you ever need to meet with her or have a concern because she has absolutely no communicatio...

Poor parent/teacher communication; No Parent Portal(but all other elementary schools in SC have it)-fishy. Good luck meeting with the Principal should you have an issue. And if you get her, She won't help you anyway.
