Founded in 1930, the Carrillo School has been a historic landmark in Barrio Viejo that has evolved and expanded over the past century from an early institution built on the city's first park into a modern magnet school. Today, the public elementary school focuses on communication and creative arts and serves about 300 students in kindergarten through fifth grade as part of the Tucson Unified School District. With a mission to engage “children's minds, bodies, and senses using multiple modes of learning, thought, and self-expression,” the faculty at Carillo infuse the core curriculum with integrated arts programs and digital learning. In addition to Imagine math and language arts, students learn through project-based lessons and participate in fine and performing arts, as well as weekly technology classes. The well-rounded approach to education helps students excel in all areas. Here, students earn test scores in reading and math significantly above the district and state averages, and the school often ranks in the top 20% of all elementary schools in Arizona. Outside of the classroom, students can also learn during field trips to local museums, farms, historic sites, and local institutions. Additionally, Carrillo is renowned for its annual Las Posadas nativity pageant, which has been celebrated for more than 80 years as a Tucson tradition. Grounded in local heritage, Carrillo Intermediate Magnet School helps students lead their community into the future.

I chose Carrillo as my own child's school, and then was fortunate enough to get a position as a teacher. My son's first years at elementary school have been made memorable by the time, energy, and complete care to detail that his teacher's have provided him. These characteristics follow all teachers...

Great school, great teachers, great programs! The principal, Lori Conner, is very professional. The magnet focus is communication through creative arts. Carrillo has a technology, art, and music specialist.
