When Dorothy Goodman founded Washington International School in 1966, she sought to celebrate Washington’s global community, appealing to residents seeking a rigorous international education. What began as just three youngsters learning in a basement has burgeoned into a highly regarded, private institution that enrolls 900 students in preschool through Grade 12. The WIS Primary School, located in Georgetown, believes that language acquisition is critical in developing cultural understanding and social awareness. Enrolling 450 students in preschool through Grade 5, the school has an average class size of 16. The curriculum centers around the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, with students receiving dual-language instruction across all subjects.
