Phineas Banning High is a public high school in the Wilmington neighborhood, known for being a longtime fixture in the community. Opened in 1926, the high school’s red brick building was well known until it was damaged in a 1971 earthquake. After classes ran from a temporary facility, the newly constructed building opened in the fall of 1976. Over the years, additions to enhance and expand the school have included a swimming pool and gymnasium. Today, the white building with splashes of the school’s bright red colors is just as recognizable as the original schoolhouse. Phineas Banning High School is a magnet school, which is considered a school within a school that offers college preparatory in partnership with local colleges. While earning AP credits, participating students can also earn college credits, kickstarting their college journeys early. The school also has a specialized bilingual office that serves about 300 students who speak English as a second language. The goal of the bilingual office is to partner with educators to ensure students receive a quality education. From anime club to theater, Phineas Banning High’s clubs and extracurricular activities offer something for every student. In addition, as the home of the Banning Pilots, the school’s robust athletic program is well known in the community and includes football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, soccer, track and field, wrestling, baseball and swim.

It's a great school that has greatly improved over the last 30 years. Over 95% of the students in the class of 2024 graduated and went to college. The process for putting kids through college is greatly funded and worked on, the support is there for every single student.
