Bold design from a big name at Gramercy Park’s eastern edge
The distinct aesthetic of Gramercy Starck, the 21-story building that features amenity interiors by prolific French industrial designer and architect Phillippe Starck, is more trendy New York or Los Angeles luxury hotel than upscale residential building. Design elements of the primarily white lobby include an oversized portrait of a young man inspired by old European paintings and a section of mirrored wall with an etched black frame and a fireplace at its base. A large black drum chandelier lined with black-and-white photography hovers over a seating area of tufted black leather chairs, glossy jet-black ottomans and a black rug. It’s dramatic. A bit rock and roll. Perhaps punk Victorian.
The 2007 launch party for the 207-unit glass and steel condo designed by GKV Architects featured performances by burlesque dancers and music from the DJs du jour. The event attracted an estimated 1,000 attendees, models and socialites among them. Port-a-potties at the event were universally labeled “Celebrity.”
Today, whatever buzz that event created has certainly dissipated. Still, the condo’s massive and impressive roof deck, with private cabanas, modern stylish furnishings and knockout views of the Empire State Building, retains the feel of a place to be seen.
For residents who get too full of themselves, the McDonald’s, Supercuts and 24-hour CVS Pharmacy located at the base of the building adds a shot of humility to their cocktail of fabulousness.
Gramercy by Starck's condominiums range from cozy 430-square-foot studios to expansive 1,818-square-foot three-bedroom residences. Each unit is a showcase of high ceilings, recessed lighting, and floor-to-ceiling quiet windows that bathe the interiors in natural light, highlighting the new hardwood floors. Kitchens are culinary sanctuaries equipped with Miele stoves, Sub-Zero refrigerators, and Fisher Paykel dishwashers, while spa-like bathrooms feature extended vanities, deep freestanding Duravit tubs, and separate showers. For added convenience, select homes include Bosch washer/dryers and private balconies or terraces, offering residents their own urban oasis.
Residents of Gramercy by Starck enjoy a wealth of amenities that cater to both relaxation and social engagement. The building's 2,600-square-foot fitness center, complete with sauna and steam rooms, offers a state-of-the-art environment for health and wellness. The full-floor lounge is a social hub, featuring a library, screening room, and billiard room, all designed with Philippe Starck's signature flair. The sundeck and landscaped roof deck provide a serene escape with canopy beds, private cabanas, and breathtaking river and city views. The communal kitchen and dinner table, along with the gas fireplace, create a warm and inviting atmosphere for gatherings. With building-wide free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour doorman, and a live-in superintendent, every need is anticipated and met with meticulous attention to detail.
Gramercy by Starck is positioned in a neighborhood renowned for its historic charm and vibrant culture. Gramercy Park, a private, key-accessed sanctuary, is just moments away, offering a tranquil retreat amidst the city's hustle. The area is a culinary delight, with a plethora of exquisite dining options, including local favorites and gourmet markets such as Fairway and Trader Joe's. For those seeking cultural experiences, art-in-the-park shows at Madison Square Park and the East River Park's running paths provide ample opportunities for leisure and recreation. The neighborhood's shopping scene includes luxury retail destinations and a 24-hour CVS for convenience.
Gramercy by Starck benefits from its proximity to a variety of transportation options, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the city. The 6 train at 23rd St station and multiple bus lines, including the M15 Downtown/Uptown and the M23 crosstown, are within walking distance, facilitating easy access to all of Manhattan. For those traveling further afield, nearby airports such as John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia are within a short drive, while the nearby 1 Avenue and 3 Avenue subway stations on the L line offer additional transit options. Whether it's a daily commute or a weekend getaway, residents are well-served by the building's strategic location.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
