A residential neighborhood close to the highway
On the southern outskirts of New York’s capital city, the Second Avenue neighborhood takes its name from the thoroughfare slicing through its northern half. Second Avenue and McCarty Avenue, helps to form the northern and southern boundaries of this Albany neighborhood and are separated by a thicket of dense, green foliage paired with sports facilities that bleed west into the Delaware Avenue area. “It’s all residential,” says Lorenzo Murray, a New York State licensed associate real estate broker with HUNT Real Estate. “All the streets connect to each other over here. If you’re looking for something that’s tucked away, it might be an area you want to look.”
Single- and multi-family homes make up the Second Avenue neighborhood, but they also provide residents with convenience to nearby shopping and dining hubs. “This section is so small,” Murray says. “Most people here are on their way to Delaware Avenue for shopping. There are lots of small-business owners on Delaware.” The Delaware Avenue neighborhood is centered around the street of the same name and helps link the area to the interstate, downtown Albany and more.
A green space with sports fields and open areas
At Krank Park, the Veterans Memorial Park baseball stadium plays host to collegiate leagues. An adjacent baseball field, as well as playground equipment and tennis and basketball courts, are located across Krank Street amid more open space. “At Krank Park, there’s some kids’ equipment and splash pads,” Murray says. “It’s definitely a community spot. The complex is commonly used for kids’ sports.” To the north of the neighborhood, Lincoln Park has several tennis courts, paths and open areas on nearly 70 acres of land. The park opened in 1900 and was the city’s first public playground. In the winter, Lincoln Park’s hilly landscape is also popular for sledding when snow covers the ground. The Christian Plumeri Sports Complex sits just west with multiple sports fields, and the Albany Knicks Rugby Club plays matches at Dick Green Field on the edge of Second Avenue.
Homes similar in architecture lining side streets
Homes in Second Avenue are typically single-family or multi-family properties and sit on either end of the neighborhood, branching off of either Second Avenue or McCarty Avenue. “All those side streets are multi-unit homes, for the most part, and the price point is $250,000 and under,” Murray says. Many date to the 1930s or even earlier, including some that were constructed in the late 19th century. Single-family homes fall into a similar price range, with homes on the lower end of the price spectrum starting around $100,000 and costs topping out around $250,000. Neighborhood architectural styles are relatively uniform, and include elements of Craftsman, Colonial and Victorian styles. Many of the roads are lined with sidewalks, and on-street parking is common.
Expansive shopping and dining near Delaware Avenue
Locals often head west to Delaware Avenue or north into downtown Albany to find restaurants and shopping. “People here are going to Delaware Avenue for shopping and dining, absolutely,” Murray says. “There’s a great restaurant – if you like Spanish food – called Sabor a Campo. O-M-G, it’s such great food!” The family-owned Nicole’s Restaurant, as well as Emack & Bolio’s Ice Cream, are among the other dining stops along Delaware Avenue. Small grocery stops within the neighborhood include 2nd Avenue Daily Grocery and K & S, while a Market 32 sits a mile north. Cardona’s Market sits about half a mile from the neighborhood, and Target and Walmart are both located across the river.
Just west of Second Avenue, the Albany Civic Theater has been around since 1955 and puts on a variety of shows . Less than a mile from the neighborhood, Scene One Spectrum 8 Theatres shows Hollywood blockbusters, indie films, classics and more.
Proximity to Interstate 87
Access to Interstate 87, known locally as the New York State Thruway, sits about a mile south of Second Avenue itself, meaning residents are close to jumping on one of the state’s most oft-traveled highways. Depending on the route, Downtown Albany is 2 miles away via Second Avenue or 3 miles away by way of Interstate 787. “Second Avenue is a cut-through, bringing people from South Albany all the way up into Delaware Avenue, which is a major thoroughfare that brings you from the Washington Park area out to Del Mar across 87. There is a lot of congestion on that main road,” Murray says. Interstate 90 is accessible less than 10 miles from the neighborhood. CDTA buses serve the neighborhood, running along Second Avenue.
A charter school for elementary- and middle-school students
The KIPP Albany Community Charter School sits on the east side of the Second Avenue neighborhood, spanning kindergarten through eighth grade. It also received the title of National Blue Ribbon School from the United States Department of Education and scores a C-minus with Niche. Drill teams, step teams and basketball programs are among the after-school activities offered by the school. Albany High School can be the next stop for students, running from grades nine through 12 and receiving a B-plus.
