If you’re considering a move to Potomac West, you would be choosing what locals will tell you is one of the most convenient locations around. Realtor Sue Kovalsky with the Jen Walker Team of McEnearney Associates Realtors says, “Here you’re just a few miles outside of D.C., within a short walk or quick drive to Metros and near the shops and restaurants of Del Ray and Potomac Yard.”
The median sale price for homes in Potomac West is $660,000, and you can expect to see mostly town houses, condominiums and row houses. At the lower end of the price range, for about $475,000, you can get a one-bedroom penthouse with a view of The Capitol. For close to $550,000, there are three-bedroom units within brick town house buildings that were constructed in the 1950s. You’ll also see two-bedroom row houses in the mid $600,000 to $700,000 price range, including a renovated three-level row house originally built in 1942.
Students here are part of Alexandria City Public School, a district of a little more than 15,000 students with an overall Niche rating of B-minus. In addition to a STEM-focused curriculum, students at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology can learn to play a musical instrument and participate in annual performances. Students can also attend Young Scholars, an after-school program that nurtures their gifted potential. George Washington Middle School offers intramural sports including rugby, softball and floor hockey, as well as extracurricular activities such as line dancing and cyber security club. Students at Alexandria City High School, which has a Niche score of B, can enroll in rigorous academic courses including AP Latin, AP Physics and AP Chemistry. Additionally, The Governor’s Health Sciences Academy, which is essentially a school within a school, enables students to earn up to 18 college credits from the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Kovalsky notes that the City of Alexandria does a great job of allowing residents access to green space. There are neighborhood pocket parks, such as Ruby Tucker Park and Lynhaven Gateway Park, that offer shaded seating in a natural setting. You can also make use of Four Mile Run Park, a nearly 47-acre space with athletic fields and a playground. If you’re looking for more vigorous exercise, hike all or a portion of Four Mile Run Trail, a paved 7-mile-long trail known for curves and a few steep sections.
You can enjoy authentic Nepalese Indian cuisine at Royal Nepal. Here you can select from a variety of appetizers and main courses made from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Another popular spot, RT’s Restaurant, serves authentic Cajun and creole dishes such as alligator stew and crawfish étouffée. You’ll want to check the show schedule at The Birchmere, a music hall where you can enjoy dinner and a concert. “There isn’t a bad seat in the house,” Kovalsky says. Residents of Potomac West can also head to nearby Del Ray for additional dining options or to Potomac Yard for retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Target and Giant Food.
Potomac West is close to several Metro stops, within walking distance of shops and restaurants and only a short drive from Reagan National Airport. “The neighborhood is accessible for families with one vehicle and for those who would rather not own a car at all,” Kovalsky says. If you’re looking to live close to Washington and would like recreation and retail at your fingertips, head to Potomac West.
