A neighborhood central to Alhambra businesses
Downtown Alhambra is a small neighborhood directly on Main Street. While most of it is occupied by storefronts, there are a few condos and townhouses that provide a handful of residential options. Buyers are attracted to the area's convenience, as businesses and restaurants sit just outside residents’ front doors. Downtown is also a busy social hub, so residents will be within walking distance of regular community events.
Main Street businesses within walking distance
Main Street runs through the neighborhood, providing many shopping and dining options. “It's a very convenient location to Starbucks, an 85C° Bakery, Sprouts and many restaurants,” says Mike Chou, Realtor and Managing Partner at The Chou Team. “It's only a minute's drive to 99 Ranch Market, Costco, Target and other stores.” Residents are also be close to banks, gyms and salons.
Walkable Downtown and the city bus
With so many restaurants and shops in the neighborhood, getting around on foot is fairly easy. It's been called a walker’s paradise, which Chou agrees with. “Most people walk in Downtown Alhambra, which is attractive and only minutes from major shopping, freeway, and other cities,” he says. “The good thing is it also has good public transportation.” Alhambra Community Transit bus circulates in the neighborhood. Interstate 10 runs a few miles south of the neighborhood.
Condos and townhouses in Downtown Alhambra
Housing in Downtown Alhambra is fairly limited, as most of the neighborhood is taken up by commercial and rental space. “Businesses dominate a good portion of the neighborhood,” says Chou. “Downtown is mostly for singles or couples just starting. It does have newer properties, especially the mid-rises in Downtown Alhambra.” Almost all options are condos and townhouses, which sell from $540,000 to $1.3 million. The range reflects the size of the unit, in-unit amenities like updated appliances, and proximity to shopping and dining.
Kids can attend highly rated Alhambra Unified Schools
The neighborhood is served by the Alhambra Unified School District. From kindergarten through eighth grade, neighborhood kids can attend William Northrup Elementary School, which earned an A-minus from Niche. Alhambra High School, serving grades nine through twelve, earned an A from Niche. The school’s Dream Center, which provides students with academic, social and emotional support, has won a Golden Bell Award.
Downtown Alhambra is a hub of events
Downtown Alhambra hosts many of the city’s events. The Chamber of Commerce organizes a farmers market every Sunday, which Chou says is popular. The city also organizes seasonal events that boost local businesses, like pub crawls, markets and expos.
Visiting city parks
There are no parks in the neighborhood, but a couple are nearby. Story Park is the closest. Here, visitors will find a playground and open green space for walking or relaxing. The park is home to the Joslyn Adult Recreation Center, which offers programs and activities for Alhambra residents 60 or older. Almansor Park is farther south but is much larger. The lake there is not for fishing, but visitors can enjoy the views. In addition to a traditional playground, the park offers a ballfield, soccer field, tennis courts and lawn bowling.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
