A private, wooded neighborhood highlighted by its community and schools
Allendale, a quaint borough in Bergen County, packs in small-town charm with longstanding local establishments, community celebrations for nearly every holiday, and a grade-A school system, all within 3 square miles. “Allendale used to be a sleepy Mayberry,” Laura Gill, a Realtor with The Gill Group says. “Now, it’s become a sophisticated community. It’s a great choice for people looking to get out of the city.”

Private homes on safe neighborhood streets
Once a summer resort destination covered by strawberry fields and orchards, it wasn't until after 1950 that Allendale's housing stock grew, and residents moved in year-round. Split-levels, ranches and colonials are the most popular housing options, with many properties built on at least half an acre. These homes typically sell for between $650,000 and $1.3 million. Homebuyers can also find new traditional homes that go for between $1.2 and $2.4 million. “Properties in Allendale have large lots and are wooded,” Gill says. “If you’re looking for privacy, it’s a nice choice.” Residents here rely more on their cars to get around, as sidewalks can be hit or miss on neighborhood streets. The CAP Index considers Allendale a safe community, which gave the neighborhood a 1 out of 10 Crime Score, significantly lower than the national average.

From Crestwood Lake to The Celery Farm
“Allendale has a lot of great recreational space,” Gill says. “Crestwood Lake is a big man-made lake with fields, event pavilions and a 9/11 memorial. It also has a beach with lifeguards. People enjoy socializing there.” Crestwood Lake visitors can also play volleyball, toss around a frisbee, or perfect their swing on the tennis court. In the winter months, the lake freezes over for ice skating. Before Allendale's Celery Farm became a nature enthusiast's haven, it was where onions and celery grew before making their way into cans of Campbell's soup. In its heyday, Allendale Produce Gardens — known to locals as the Celery Farm— was a supplier for the Campbell Soup Company and wholesale markets. The area became a 107-acre nature preserve of woods and wetlands after the borough acquired it in the 1980s. Nowadays, visitors can meander along the walking trails, pausing at the bird observation platforms to take notice of the nearly 250 recorded bird species. Across the street from the Celery Farm is the John Fell House. Located on three acres, this Revolutionary War-era mansion and museum hosts weddings and community events like bourbon tastings, a Holiday Open House and craft shows. Brookside Tennis and Swim Club is an option for residents who enjoy playing tennis, pickleball, and swimming. The club is private and for members only.

The Allendale Bar & Grill, a neighborhood staple
Residents can walk everywhere in downtown Allendale, including past the collection of eateries, boutiques, specialty stores and business offices housed in vintage brick buildings with colorful awnings. A staple of the neighborhood is The Allendale Bar & Grill, a former hotel tavern turned beloved local watering hole. As the borough's de facto gathering space and place to be on football Sundays, AB&G has many burger and sandwich offerings. Customers can enjoy the classic Italian food at Savini Restaurant. “I love Savini,” Gill says. “They have the best shrimp Savini.” Adjacent to downtown is Allendale's train station, which makes for hassle-free commutes. There is also a strip mall anchored with an Acme supermarket for grocery shopping and Nirvana Indian Kitchen, a family-owned authentic Indian cuisine restaurant.
The Allendale Bar & Grill has roots in the neighborhood dating back to 1935.

Lived in Allendale for 12 years. Extremely high property taxes. When we moved the town wouldn't give us a courtesy bulk garbage move out pick up. Then the town threatened to fine us for the garbage left on the curb. We were forced to use a junk pickup company and pay $829 out of pocket.
