An easy walk to outdoor recreation and downtown Ann Arbor
West Park is a pint-sized neighborhood anchored by a 27-acre green space that welcomes visitors from across the city. “It’s a much-loved park,” says City Parks Manager Josh Landefeld. “We are fortunate to have this piece of property because there are not many large parks this close to downtown.” The park is looking a little well-loved, however, and the neighborhood eagerly supports plans for improvements. “Staff is working with the community to reimagine what the park can be moving forward,” Landefeld says. In addition to enjoying easy access to green space, homeowners like their proximity to downtown Ann Arbor and its buzzing Main Street.
All roads lead to West Park with entrances along Huron Street, Miller Avenue, and 7th Street.

Small neighborhood packed tight with a creative assortment of homes
There are only 122 homes in West Park, but they celebrate a surprisingly dynamic range of architectural styles. Sidewalks link memorable Tudor Revivals, iconic Victorian houses, inviting Colonial-style homes and head-turning Arts and Crafts bungalows. Many were built in the early 1900s. Homes tend to be beautifully maintained, and tidy green lawns and shade trees are hallmarks of much of the community. Front porches look primed for an afternoon sit-and-chat while backyards along 7th Street open onto the park. Homes in West Park range from $400,000 for a two- or three-bedroom house to around $629,000 for an updated home with three or more bedrooms. Miller Manor, a low-income apartment complex, is located on Miller Avenue, and borders the park.

Savor post-hike rewards at Big City Small World and Frita Banditos
The flagship pastry at Big City Small World Bakery across from the park? The ding dong: two slices of chocolate cake stuffed with frosting and drenched in chocolate ganache. Vegan and gluten-free options here are also popular. Downtown, with its spectacular collection of breweries, fine-dining establishments and college hangouts, is one block away. Stretchy pants are a must at downtown’s Frita Batidos. At this acclaimed Cuban hotspot chef Eve Aronoff slathers chorizo burgers with sweet chile mayo then tops them with shoestring fries, best washed down with a fresh lime milkshake. After dinner, it’s easy to take in a play at the Ann Arbor Civic Theater. Locals stop at Knight’s Market for groceries.

Enjoy baseball and basketball, but not the bandshell, at West Park
With basketball courts, baseball fields, a boardwalk, a playground and a community garden, sprawling West Park stays busy. But this 85-year-old park, one of the oldest in the city, is awaiting serious upgrades. Its striking 1930s bandshell, for example, has hosted popular outdoor performances, including concerts by the Grateful Dead and MC5, over the decades. The stage closed in 2021, however, after officials discovered cracks in its foundation. The city is working with the neighborhood to determine the best steps forward for its rehabilitation, considering neighborhood noise and how to incorporate modern technology. Another popular green space is the Hannah Nature Area, a one-acre park with tall shade trees and native wildflowers growing beside its pathways.
