Pristine mountain living
Bordered by a national forest and ensconced by the French Broad River, Avery Creek is a community rich in natural wonders waiting to be discovered. Mountain living located 11 miles south of Asheville, Avery Creek is seamlessly enveloped in nature. Picturesque drives curl around hillside views of the Blue Ridge Mountains through the greenery of old oaks and sturdy hickories, with the namesake creek winding around the town's southern edge alongside acres of dense forest. The French Broad River curves along the eastern edge, providing breathtaking scenery.
Value at multiple price points
The housing market in South Asheville continues to move quickly at multiple price points with some listings receiving multiple offers. The Asheville Metropolitan Area has been one of the country's fastest-growing regions but due to the topography and the amount of protected land, building homes is more complicated and there is a high demand. "We don't have the ability to sprawl like you do in more flat areas like Florida or Texas. So we're very confined in the areas that we're able to develop," says Josh Smith, President of Walnut Cove Realty/Allen Tate. Buyers can find large mountain estates in the two to three million range in the Walnut Cove neighborhood with the more affordable craftsman and prairie-style builds between $500,000 to $1 million. At the top end of the market, Smith noted many of his clients are building homes styled as mountain modern. "They're holding onto the traditional elements but they're incorporating the newer looks, the open floor plan and the lighter colors, and entertaining spaces."
Buncombe County School District
Avery's Creek Elementary School is on the north end of town on a quiet campus with sprawling mountain views. Avery's Creek parents love the school's unique dual language program, which is integrated into the curriculum for each grade level. Diversity is a point of pride at this school, and it received an overall B grade from Niche.com. Charles T. Koontz Intermediate School is a "Leader in Me" school and educators teach and actively promote the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in coordination with their positive behavior intervention and support program, and have earned a B-plus grade. Valley Springs Middle School and TC Roberson High School both earned A-minus ratings. The high school is known for its progressive education program dedicated to providing equity in opportunity for students with physical and mental disabilities.
An outdoorsman's playground
Avery Creek is a small tributary of the Davidson River and is known as a prime spot for flyfishing rich in wild trout with an abundance of outfitters taking new and experienced anglers on guided tours to help reel in the big one. Coming to the area, Smith says people are looking for a four seasons climate that naturally draws people outside and on the trails in addition to Asheville’s offerings. “When they get that four seasons climate they’re looking for outdoor recreational opportunities. Mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway in addition to what Asheville offers in an eclectic culinary scene, we’ve got great art museums, we’ve got great theater, we’ve got a great symphony. So they can leave larger metropolitan areas but still have a very core social component that they’re accustomed to in a larger metropolitan area, but do it in a much smaller environment where they have access to outdoor recreational activities.” Lake Julian Park and its namesake body of water are right across I-26, two miles east of Avery Creek. Area residents can enjoy this peaceful, scenic respite to reconnect with nature. Fishing enthusiasts will be in for a treat with Lake Julian stocked with bass, catfish, bream and crappie. Guests can rent a paddle boat or launch their own boat and enjoy life on the water. The park features a myriad of walking trails, a disc golf course, a playground, and a beach volleyball court for more fun in the sun. Avery Creek has direct access to the Pisgah National Forest with a trailhead, and its 500,000 acres of natural wonders with some of the area's best hiking and mountain biking trails. You can find waterfalls and scenic lookouts and take a 15-mile scenic drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the three-mile section of trail stretching through Avery Creek, seekers are greeted by cascades and pools before entering a rich forest of yellow poplar, red maple, and hickory trees.
Culinary oasis
Locals head south on I-26 for errands and grocery pickups at the shops on Airport Road where you can find the usual big box retailers. For in-town dining, residents turn to Mary's Burritos and Beer, a popular family-owned eatery on Brevard Road serving South American, Salvadorian and Mexican dishes. The cabin-style building is a casual, cozy hangout for Avery Creek locals. In Biltmore Park you’ll find local boutiques and restaurants. Luella’s Bar-B-Que is known for its pulled pork made from scratch daily. The family-owned Asheville institution prides itself on being a neighborhood gathering place with crave-worthy southern flavors.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
