Ballston has most needs within walking distance
This Arlington neighborhood brings a liveliness to an area otherwise surrounded by quieter, green suburbs. After much recent development, the community has expanded retail hubs like Ballston Mall and continues to grow its housing stock of high-rise apartments and condo complexes. Carol Temple, a longtime Arlington local and real estate agent with Coldwell Banker, says about Ballston's construction, "Most of it has been one-offs, new construction where they've torn down existing properties and started over. Much of the new construction is multi-use buildings, with retail on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. Rentals are high here as well." Living in this compact urban neighborhood, residents here are a short walk away from Clarendon nightlife or Ballston Mall across Wilson Boulevard, with access to upscale retail and dining in the new Ballston Quarter food court.

Ballston Quarter mall has expanded in recent years
With new developments in the last few decades, Ballston has ample dining and shopping options in Ballston Quarter, just across Wilson Boulevard. Ballston Quarter's newly built food court hosts plenty of unique dining spots. Hal & Al's Barbecue is the first halal barbecue joint in the DMV area. Ted's Bulletin's original DC location became so popular that it expanded into Ballston, so locals can quickly reach their brunch or dinner entrees in its upscale decor. Or turn onto North Kenmore Street and try El Pollo Rico, which has served Peruvian-style charbroiled chicken and yucca fries to the community since the 1980s. El Pollo Rico's popularity has invited celebrity customers from Anthony Bourdain to Serena Williams. Residents can get groceries at Giant supermarket or walk a couple blocks east to Trader Joe's in Clarendon.

Ballston's nearby nightlife
For a blast from the past, CarPool is a sports bar that takes patrons back in time with its retro decor. Catch a game on one of several flat-screen TVs while having the option to play billiards or skee ball. A huge nightlife hub is in Clarendon, less than a mile east of Ballston on Wilson Boulevard. Residents can dance the night away at spots like Bar Bao and Don Tito's, which has a rooftop bar. There's also Clarendon Ballroom, a place for Arlingtonians to party for over 20 years. Temple jokingly says, 'I refer to Ballston, very tongue in cheek, as Clarendon for grownups. Clarendon is big for 20 somethings. The Ballston-Virginia Square area is a 7-minute walk from Clarendon, and much more residential and quieter."
