Southwest Atlanta's Cascade Avenue neighborhood has roots that date back nearly a century. Its earliest homes are historic cottages and bungalows, and the John A. White Golf Course dates to the 1920s. The neighborhood remains predominantly residential today, offering quick access to acres of green space at John A. White Park and several locally owned restaurants along its primary thoroughfare. Its location near the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and lower housing prices than the greater Atlanta metro area continue to draw prospective buyers.

Historic bungalows and cottages make up the bulk of the community's housing stock

Cascade Avenue mainly features bungalows and cottages built between 1920 and 1950. A few mid-century ranch-style homes are available, and newly constructed contemporary colonials are starting to pop up. Townhomes are available in the Belmonte Hill subdivision. Several homes here have been partially renovated or entirely remodeled, but many remain in their original condition. Many houses have wide front porches adorned with outdoor seating and hanging plants. They overlook quarter-acre lots with towering pines and oaks. Housing prices range anywhere from $150,000 for a home needing repairs to $700,000 for a new build. Townhomes sell between $180,000 and $230,000.

Booker T. Washington High School offers an Early College program

Atlanta Public Schools scores an overall B on Niche and serves over 50,000 students. Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy, serving pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students, receives a C-minus on Niche. Herman J. Russell West End Academy has a C-minus on Niche. Booker T. Washington High School scores a C. Washington High School was the first public high school in Georgia for African Americans and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school employs an Early College program that helps students earn associate degrees with their diplomas, partnering with colleges and universities across Atlanta.

John A. White is the heart of the community with a popular golf course

John A. White Park sprawls across the heart of the community and is known for its nine-hole golf course. The course opened in the late 1920s but was entirely renovated by the end of the 20th century. The park also features a seasonal pool, playground and multi-use sports fields. The city is actively building the John A. White Clubhouse, which will house a golf pro shop, a senior activity center and dining options. The Joseph D. McGhee Tennis Center operates nine tennis courts just north of John A. White Park. The neighborhood is also home to Barbara A. McCoy Park, which features a playground, a small paved walking path and green space.

Cascade Avenue features several locally owned restaurants

Most of the community’s commercial infrastructure is concentrated along Cascade Avenue. Cascade Heights Center is a small strip mall where locals handle banking needs or grab dinner. Big Daddy’s infuses Caribbean flavors with its Southern-style cooking, serving entrees like curried chicken and barbecue beef short ribs with sides like candied yams and collard greens. Garden Parc is a popular brunch spot with a bottomless buffet and an hour of complimentary mimosas. About a mile north on Cascade Avenue is Kroger, one of the community’s closest big-box grocery stores.

Heading into downtown Atlanta

Cascade Avenue is mainly a car-dependent community, but MARTA buses shuttle across its main thoroughfare. Downtown Atlanta is about 5 miles east of the community, offering access to Interstates 85, 75 and 20, and Interstate 285 is accessible 4 miles west. Grady Memorial Hospital, the community’s nearest medical facility, is 5 miles away in downtown Atlanta. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 10 miles south, increasing the community’s noise factor.
