Rolling Toomer’s Corner in downtown Auburn
Two towering oaks welcome students and visitors alike to the campus of Auburn University. On football Saturdays in the fall, it’s not unusual to see the trees — not to mention the lampposts, stoplights, traffic signs and anything else in throwing distance — strewn with toilet paper, celebrating a Tigers win. “They shut down all the roads next to Toomer’s Corner and everybody goes,” says Catherine Garrett, an Auburn alum who has lived in the city her whole life. “We would keep a separate toilet paper stash just for rolling Toomer’s.” The lively Toomer’s Corner is named for Toomer’s Drugstore, a fixture in downtown Auburn since 1896. With apartments and condos for students, and of course the obligatory college bars and boutiques, downtown Auburn orients itself around the university all year long, not just during football season.

Toomer’s Drugstore and other iconic businesses
The iconic Toomer’s Drugstore was founded by an alum of Auburn’s first football team and has been intertwined with the Tigers ever since. “You have to go to Toomer’s Drugstore, of course, and get one of their famous lemonades,” says Lori Fuller, Realtor with eXp Realty Southern Branch. College kids and visiting families coexist downtown, with everyone frequenting the restaurants and boutiques. Hamilton’s on Magnolia is an Auburn staple with steak and seafood entrees, while Skybar Cafe is a favorite for its live music and rooftop bar. Wrapsody of Auburn, also nearby, is a popular boutique. Meanwhile, both Target and Publix opened locations in downtown in the last few years, giving students and residents easy access to groceries and other essentials.

“War Eagle” at Jordan-Hare Stadium
The Auburn Downtown Merchants Association sponsors plenty of events throughout the year to bring residents out to the local businesses, from student and alumni events during homecoming to the annual Christmas parade. But, as in many college towns, football takes over downtown Auburn on fall weekends. Jordan-Hare Stadium, home of the Tigers, is less than half a mile from downtown, with more than 88,000 fans packing the stadium during home games.

Student housing and gameday condos
Apartment buildings and condo complexes are scattered throughout downtown Auburn, mainly as student housing. However, some condos cater toward the gameday crowd, for those diehard fans who come into town on football weekends. “There are a lot of investors that want to buy gameday homes to just use for themselves,” Fuller says. “Not just to come in for football but basketball, baseball, or just to see their kids that go to school there. But some of them buy for short-term rentals.” One-bedroom condos can go between the mid-$200,000s and $300,000s, while two- and three-bedroom units sell from the mid-$400,000s to almost $800,000.
