You’ll never be way off-base in the Windsor Spring Road area of Augusta. The 55,000-acre Fort Gordon military base is strategically positioned right next to this suburban enclave of South Augusta. Home of the United States Army Signal Corps and Cyber Center of Excellence, Fort Gordon is Augusta’s largest employer with more than 25,000 military and civilian employees. “The biggest draw to that area is that it’s so close to Fort Gordon,” says Ramona Murray, a Realtor with VanderMorgan Realty. “It’s two to five miles from Fort Gordon. If you work there, it’s a good place to be.”

Driving around the area’s rolling hills, you’ll discover a wealth of split-levels and brick ranch homes primarily built in the 1970s and ‘80s. They typically offer 1,500 square feet of living space and rest on lots approaching a-quarter acre with mature pine and maple trees that are common to the area. “You get more land out there for your money,” Murray says. “In the newer developments the lots are smaller. This is a more established area.”

The average list price hovers around $165,000. “Things are selling pretty quickly in this area,” Murray says. “If you see something on the market, it’s typically gone within 30 days.”

Public school students may attend schools such as Jamestown elementary, Glenn Hills middle and Glenn Hills high. As part of the Richmond County School System, students at all three schools have access to free one-on-one online tutoring services.

From Walmart Neighborhood Market to Dollar Tree to Waffle House, Windsor Spring area residents have access to plenty of nationally known chain stores. And there are some independent options to choose from as well. For dining out in the area, try Seleste’s Authentic Kitchen & Catering for soul food favorites that will make you feel like you’re at your grandma’s house for Sunday dinner. A mainstay for more than 20 years, Dennis’ Barbeque is the go-to spot for fall-off-the-bone ribs, collard greens and mac n cheese. And a wider variety of shopping and dining options can be found at Augusta Mall, which is less than 10 miles away. Undergo retail therapy Macy’s department store, pick up the latest best-seller at Barnes & Noble or meet friends for dinner at P.F. Chang’s Chinese bistro.

Outdoor fun awaits at Woodlake Park, where you can watch your kids frolic on the playground or have a picnic lunch under the pavilion. Meadowbrook Park offers a paved trail that’s popular among dog walkers and joggers alike.

For more entertainment options, downtown Augusta is just 10 miles away. Popular pastimes include catching a music concert at the 8,000 seat James Brown Arena or the more intimate Miller Theater, a restored 1940 movie palace. And from March to November many locals spend their Saturdays supporting area artisans and food vendors at the Augusta Market, which takes place at 8th St. Plaza along the Savannah River.

For those seeking proximity to Fort Gordon, consider the Windsor Spring Road area as mission accomplished.
