A small, San Joaquin Valley suburb

Polo Grounds is a San Joaquin Valley suburb 7 miles from downtown Bakersfield. The neighborhood falls under two well-regarded school districts, has easy access to the local highway— California State Route 58—and has homes that sit close together with manicured lawns. “Polo Grounds offers residents a quiet neighborhood with a bit more land and freedom since there is no homeowners association compared to many of the newer communities in Bakersfield,” says William Gordon, a Realtor with Watson Realty and a lifelong local in the real estate industry since 2007. It’s a small, tight-knit neighborhood with a community center and theatre, The Stars Playhouse. It’s all near Polo Park, a 40-acre greenspace that’s 2 miles, or 5 minutes, north. “Polo Park is the hub for kids sports for all of Bakersfield, regardless of where you live,” says Erik Van Denk, a Realtor with Central Valley Property Advisors who’s worked in the area for nearly two decades.

Craftsman homes with Victorian features

Homebuyers can choose between ranch-style homes and two-story homes with dormer windows and gabled roofs. Some two-story homes have Victorian-inspired architecture, while others are classic Craftsman homes. One-story homes are priced between $250,000 and $450,000, while larger properties range from $450,000 to $750,000. Many homes are separated by stone gate fences and shaded by tall oak trees. No matter the home style, streets have a classic suburban feel with wide sidewalks, manicured front lawns. When it comes to parking, people can put their vehicles in garages, driveways or on the street.

Studying at highly-esteemed Bakersfield schools

The Rosedale Union Elementary School District serves children and earns an A-minus from Niche. The Kern High School District is the specific district for high school students, graded B-minus. Kids can attend Rosedale-North Elementary School, which earns a B, before moving on to Freedom Middle School, which receives an A-minus and is ranked No. 3 for Bakersfield’s best public middle schools. Young teens may advance to Liberty High School, which is graded A and ranks No. 2 for best public high schools in the city. Denk says the school has notable athletic programs, specifically football. California State University, Bakersfield is 4 miles south. Polo Grounds has no private schools, but nearby places of worship include The Apostolic Church and the Highland Church of Christ. The Sunrise Community Center is an Islamic education facility that teaches math, science and history under the Qur’an values. It also offers students a gym and an outdoor sports field and garden.

Weekly baseball practices at Polo Park

Polo Park has a playground, a splash pad and eight sports fields, which are regularly visited for soccer, flag football, softball and baseball practices and games. North Rosedale Park also has plenty of sports fields outside the neighborhood. About two miles away, the Links at Riverlakes Ranch Golf Course has a public, 18-hole layout. The Greenacres Community Center is about 1 mile south, offering people indoor athletic courts and outdoor pavilions.

Family outings and first dates at Rosedale Village

People can run errands at Rosedale Village, home to a Dollar Tree, Smart & Final Extra! – the local grocery store – and Studio Movie Grill, the neighborhood movie theater. Carnicería La Carreta, Inc. is a Mexican grocer on Calloway Drive. Mom’s House has the same vibe as eating home-cooked food made with love. People can enjoy soul food such as catfish, collard greens and cornbread. Country Boy Drive-In has served the community for decades with classic burger and sandwich combo meals. It has a drive-thru and comfy indoor booth seating. For a night out, people visit Stars Playhouse — which sits next to Rosedale Village — for small, intimate theatre performances.

Commuting via Kern Transit

Polo Grounds is between Hageman Road and Rosedale Highway, also known as California State Route 58. Both roads run east and west and lead to downtown Bakersfield. Kern Transit has bus stops along Hagerman Road, helping commuters reach desired destinations. The Meadows Field Airport is 7 miles away. Adventist Health Bakersfield is 6 miles away for emergencies and accidents.

Air pollution in Bakersfield

Bakersfield’s air quality is polluted because of its geography. It’s positioned in the San Joaquin Valley near the mountains, where polluted air can get trapped. Dust can also get trapped in the air since a heavy farming area surrounds Bakersfield. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has programs like Park and Ride, which encourage developers to build commuter lots and decrease vehicle usage.
