With a name like Better Waverly, some would think the community was boastful, but this North Baltimore neighborhood is community-focused and features unique architecture, good restaurants and a central location in the city. The layout of Better Waverly is a mix of urban and residential, with tree-lined streets, wide boulevards and active transit. “The area has older, unique homes that are still quite affordable,” says Melvin Knight, a longtime Baltimore resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker.

Students have their choice with Baltimore City Schools
Students here attend Baltimore City Public Schools like Waverly Elementary, which gets a C-minus from Niche and serves students in grades Pre-K through eighth. The historic Baltimore City College, which earns an A-minus, is a public International Baccalaureate World school offering an intense college-preparatory program for high school students. Easily recognized by its 150-foot Gothic tower, the school has been named one of Maryland’s top public schools. Residents can also take courses at the nearby Johns Hopkins University campus. Hopkins is one of the largest employers in Baltimore. “A lot of people walk to Johns Hopkins from here, it’s that close,” adds Knight.
Waverly Elementary School is a community centered school making their students feel welcome.

Former Baltimore Memorial Stadium is now a community green space
Many remember Better Waverly as the site of the former Baltimore Memorial Stadium. Opened in 1950, and seating nearly 65,000 people, the stadium was host to the city’s baseball and football teams including the Orioles, the Baltimore Colts/Stallions and the Baltimore Ravens, until its closure in 1997. Today, this space is occupied by an expansive castle-like playground, athletic fields, and a baseball diamond complete with a home plate memorializing the former stadium. The Weinberg YMCA is also nearby and features a state-of-the-art fitness center and an indoor lap pool.

Start by grabbing a bite at Pete’s Grill, a breakfast/lunch staple, where former Olympian Michael Phelps has been known to dine. Then stop in at Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse to pick up a good read and sip on a hot drink. The 32nd Street Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday year-round from 7AM to noon. Residents can buy fresh produce, meats, and artisanal goods from over sixty local vendors.
