An apple orchard in the middle of Callaway-Garrison’s main avenue

A median full of green grass and blooming apple trees lines the main thoroughfare of Callaway-Garrison, a Northwest Baltimore suburb. The trees were originally planted in the 1990s by the Baltimore Orchard Project, whose mission is to foster collaboration and connections within neighborhoods in need of restoration. Callaway-Garrison has an overall 4 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, with higher scores for violent crime. Each year, locals gather for a day of harvesting and music, strengthening the community and bringing neighbors together. When it’s not time to go apple picking, a host of restaurants and parks sit within just a few miles. Commuters often settle down in this area because Interstate 83 runs nearby, allowing for a quick 7-mile drive into downtown Baltimore. Callaway-Garrison offers convenience, an improving sense of community and quieter residential streets, away from the downtown crowds.

Detached homes and Baltimore rowhouses in Callaway-Garrison

Caring for Callaway Avenue’s orchard has inspired many residents to sustain their own gardens and front lawns. Many properties have private driveways, so street parking along the narrow sidewalks is not too hard to find. Foursquares and colonials are most common among detached home styles, while other builds include the signature brick Baltimore rowhouses and duplexes with small porches. When compared to surrounding neighborhoods, like East Arlington and Ashburton, “Houses are priced a little bit lower here,” says Eze Amadi, a local Realtor with Fathom Realty. Three-bedroom rowhouses and duplexes often cost between about $80,000 and $200,000, while a larger detached home with three-to-six bedrooms can range from $250,000 to $450,000. First-time buyers can consult Northwest Housing Center, which provides insight into buying a home and maintaining its historic charm over time.

The zoo, an arboretum and the Preakness Stakes

Apart from the annual apple picking celebration, Callaway-Garrison residents can participate in plenty of other nearby activities in Northwest Baltimore. About 2 miles away, Pimlico has held the Preakness Stakes horse race since 1873. Beginning in the fall of 2024, the course will undergo a massive renovation, so until at least 2027, the race will be in Laurel, about 30 miles away. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore also hosts plenty of events and has over 1,500 animals across various exhibits. The zoo has the largest African penguin colony in the country, a goat grooming experience and a chance to participate in rhino or otter training. The Cylburn Arboretum is another attraction nearby, with 200 acres of gardens and a museum. Here, visitors can also participate in various special events, including outdoor yoga sessions, gardening workshops and guided nature walks.

Surrounded by nearby parks in Callaway-Garrison

Northwest Baltimore is riddled with outdoor recreation space, with some major spots, like Gwynn Oak, Leakin and Druid Hill parks all within about 4 miles. All three offer plenty of walking and hiking trails, while Leakin Park features a nature center with animal exhibits, and Druid Hill Park is home to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. Additional renovations are underway at Hanlon Park, including new sports courts and fields, a central gathering plaza and a playground, all surrounding Lake Ashburton. The benefits of the project go beyond added recreation options: “It’ll be a several-year project with a lot of infrastructure that will help property value in the future,” Amadi says. Golfers can also reach the public Forest Park course in a matter of minutes. Originally opened in 1934, the course remains a staple in the community for both casual players and professionals.

Dining on Reisterstown Road and shopping at Aldi

Callaway-Garrison residents can easily access Northwest Baltimore restaurants. “You can find somewhere to serve your taste buds within 10 minutes,” Amadi explains. Dolfield Avenue has a few casual spots, including Legend’s Pizza and Arlington Chicken and Fish, known for its Philly cheesesteaks and chicken boxes. A trip up Reisterstown Road leads to shopping at Owings Mill and authentic eateries along the way, like the kosher David Chu’s China Bistro. After a meal at David Chu’s, folks can go next door to Seven Mile Market, the largest kosher grocery store in the country. Aldi is the closest grocery store, though ShopRite and smaller markets are also within about 1 mile. The Home Depot and Giant Food provide goods within about 3 miles at Reisterstown Road Plaza, and the closest Target is 7 miles down Reisterstown Road. For a wider variety of retail, restaurants and other shopping options, Mondawmin Mall and The Village of Cross Keys are both about 3 miles away.

Callaway Elementary and school choice for upper grades

Designed to help students gain life skills and discover career paths, the academy includes internship opportunities and kinesthetic learning options. For after-school programs, the school offers extracurriculars like a robotics team and a gaming club. Private prekindergarten through 12th grade options with A-plus ratings are within about 4 miles at Gilman School for boys and The Bryn Mawr School for girls. These schools hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Niche’s list of best high schools for STEM in Baltimore.

Taking the metro into downtown Baltimore

The closest subway takes off from the West Cold Springs Metro station. Folks can also catch a ride on the CityLink Lime buses from Liberty Heights Avenue. Those who prefer to drive can take nearby Interstate 83, which provides access to downtown Baltimore and Interstate 95 for trips up and down the East Coast. The Baltimore/Washington International Airport is about 13 miles away, directly off Interstate 195. BWI has an Amtrak stop and a Light RailLink station.
