Community-minded suburb between city parks
The long-reaching branches of mature oak and maple trees shade the sidewalks and residential streets of Idlewood, a suburban neighborhood about 20 minutes north of Baltimore. Most residents live in townhomes that sit side by side with garage alleys around the back, bringing people close together both physically and communally. “It’s important to promote neighbor engagement,” says Jay Wilson, an Idlewood resident and Vice President of the Idlewood Community Association. “We go on community walks to get to know each other, and it improves the Idlewood experience.” Locals also take advantage of their central location between two major parks – Chinquapin Run Park and Mt Pleasant Woods Park, and downtown Towson is only 3 miles away.

Baltimore townhomes with fenced-in yards
Homes in Idlewood consist of traditional Baltimore row houses and semi-detached townhomes. Two-story red brick properties vary in design, including simple flat facades, bowed windows or decorative stone inlay. Small, roofed front porches and neatly manicured lawns sit several feet back from the main roads, and fenced-in backyards allow for pets and playtime. While these 1,300-square-foot townhome units – ranging in price between $140,000 and $275,000 – are the primary options in the area, there are also a few ranch homes and bungalows available with around the same square footage for about $370,000.

Walking to Mt Pleasant and Chinquapin parks
Golf enthusiasts and nature lovers alike head to the east side of town to Mt Pleasant Woods Park. In addition to the 18-hole public fairway that once hosted Arnold Palmer, the park also features an ice arena. On the west side of Idlewood is Chinquapin Run Park with 76 acres of open athletic field space, hiking trails and a playground along a babbling creek. “Both of these parks are within walking distance from any part of Idlewood,” says Wilson. To the north is the smaller Overlook Park, which also features athletic fields, trails and a playground.

From point A to point B on the MTA
Several MTA bus stops line Loch Raven Boulevard on the east side and The Alameda on the west side, the two main thoroughfares around Idlewood. The latter leads to downtown Baltimore in about 6 miles. “Idlewood is commuter-friendly with local bus routes and the MTA light rail that reaches the BWI Airport and downtown Baltimore,” Wilson adds.
Local eats at Belvedere Square and Colin’s
While there is no grocery store directly in Idlewood, a few are just a quick drive away. To the north at Ravenwood Shopping Center or to the west at York Road Plaza, residents can grab essentials at Giant. “And ShopRite, Eddies and Shoppers are just minutes away,” Wilson notes. Also on the west side of town is Belvedere Square Market, a food court that includes boutiques and eateries. Belvedere Square also hosts the Summer Sounds concert series every Friday during the warmer months and festivals like Belvedere in Bloom, a Spring makers’ market. For a local bite, residents flock to Colin’s Seafood and Grill for their assortment of entrees like the baked stuffed salmon or the fried shrimp platter.

An active Idlewood Community Association
Living in Idlewood means benefiting from an active community association, with board members working to improve public spaces. “We host neighborhood cleanups and social events to help residents stay informed and connected,” Wilson says. For a change of pace outside of the neighborhood, locals are close to Towson where there’s a shopping mall, dining options and Towson University.
