Remembering Jonestown’s past and reforming its future
Established in 1732, the Jonestown area of downtown Baltimore is a historic locale with a diverse background. The neighborhood features historic museums and urban amenities, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, less than 1 mile away. “Jonestown, also known as Old Town, is primarily businesses and institutions with some condos, townhouses and multi-unit properties. It has a fluid definition, and it continues to change its name and identity over the course of time,” says Maryland Center for History and Culture’s reference librarian, Francis O’Neill.
The CAP Index Crime Score is 9 out of 10, which is significantly higher than the national average of 4. The community, however, is undergoing a period of recovery and restoration. “Jonestown is gradually becoming more popular as Little Italy’s population grows and spills onto North Central Avenue. The city is also allocating more money toward nicer public housing and other projects,” O’Neill says. Since the government has begun building housing here again, O’Neill concludes that “parts of it are salvageable, and right now, there are parts actively being salvaged.”
Jonestown was established in 1732 & is comprised of 10 acres in downtown Baltimore.

Jumping into Jonestown’s historic attractions
Jonestown’s 10 acres is packed full of history. Looming over President Street at more than 200 feet, the Phoenix Shot Tower’s columnar building was used to create ammunition until 1892. The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House is also in the area, which was home to the American flag that inspired the National Anthem. The Carroll Mansion, named for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is another museum with guided tours.
Jonestown is home to two major cultural museums. The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, established in 2005, offers a rich exploration of Maryland African American history. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, this museum features a permanent collection of over 11,000 documents and objects, rotating exhibitions and a variety of year-round programs and events. The nearby Jewish Museum of Maryland, founded in 1960, began as a mission to preserve and restore the historic Lloyd Street Synagogue. Over time, the museum has expanded to include a variety of exhibits and educational programs, as well as tours of the Lloyd Street and B’nai Israel synagogues.

Red brick row houses in Jonestown
The housing market in Jonestown is limited, consisting mostly of classic Baltimore row houses and multifamily homes. The majority of the population opts to rent two-to-three-bedroom units, often for $900 to $3,000 per month. Because Jonestown has mostly public housing owned by the city, rent can be reduced for eligible tenants. For those who choose to purchase, row houses can sell between $100,000 and $400,000 depending on the number of bedrooms and renovations. Streetscapes are known to have an urban feel, and homes typically provide garage space, though street parking is also common.

Jonestown parks and Inner Harbor activities
McKim Park off Fayette Street and Central Avenue serves as a community gathering spot behind the Ronald McDonald House. The park features a playground, green space and walking trails funded by both the charity and the city. Jonestown’s location also allows for quick access to Baltimore’s waterfront area, which has more parks with harbor views, restaurants, museums and other activities, such as the Baltimore Aquarium. O’Neill says that although many locals drive and take public transportation, the Inner Harbor is accessible by foot.
