A historic, active community

With its curving lanes, old-world architecture and beautiful landscaping, Original Northwood may be a small neighborhood that began in 1930, but it thrives today because of its close-knit and active community. “Everyone’s so friendly here, and that’s hard to find,” says Realtor Jennifer Marsh with Cummings and Co. Realtors. Marsh has sold real estate in the area for the past 7 years and knows the Baltimore metro area. “The Original Northwood Association ensures homes are kept up well and organizes events for kids and adults. Lots of kids live in Original Northwood. It’s a lovely neighborhood if you’re raising a family or living alone. You always have friends.”

Well-designed homes

Developed by the Roland Park Montebello Company, an offshoot of the famed Olmstead Brothers landscape architectural firm, Original Northwood features Tudors, red-brick colonials, Cape Cods and English cottages tucked away behind lush front yards with old-growth trees. “We call it Mayberry, here. It’s like the country in the city, a lot of green, and everyone helps each other out,” says Realtor and long-time resident Eleni Bonds. A walk down Argonne Drive or any street in Original Northwood will reveal what she’s talking about. Well-manicured lawns and gardens lead passersby along winding roads that dip, climb and hug the natural terrain. Finished in 1953, all 396 homes in the neighborhood were designed by lead architect John A. Ahlers, making Original Northwood one of the first planned communities in the nation. Today, single-family homes list for between $350,000 and $400,000, and townhouses are priced between $160,000 and $260,000.

In the shadow of Morgan State, Original Northwood is built into a hill with beautiful homes with some great architecture and history; a pocket neighborhood we had overlooked for over 15 years. Like most of Baltimore, crime can rear its ugly head, but the community is tight, diverse and very welcoming. Popsicle night, Cheese and wine and holiday parties are regular, its an HOA but not oppressive. Come drive on through, you will see, its amazing.
