At the foot of the Black Hills
Situated just above the northeastern outskirts of Rapid City, Blackhawk is a quiet, cozy neighborhood in the shade of the Black Hills. With its modern homes, natural beauty and proximity to downtown, this steadily growing suburban community has come a long way from its origins as a thinly populated stretch of rural countryside. “It’s a terrific location,” says Michael Frybarger, owner of Ascend Realty. “You’ve got the Black Hills on the west and another little set of smaller hills on the east, creating this valley that’s seeing a lot of activity.”
Midcentury modern homes with large lots
Closer to Interstate 90 in the eastern part of the neighborhood, unpaved roads and narrow sidewalks lead past Midcentury Modern homes with an average construction date in the mid-1980s. Dwellings sit on lots as large as half an acre, with birch and oak trees stretching above fenced-in backyards. Prices here begin in the high $100,000s for smaller homes, maxing out in the low $300,000s as homes get larger. Home prices increase further west and closer to the Black Hills and the wilderness surrounding them. This “acorn tax” – what locals call the price increase as you get closer to the hills – starts in the low $400,000s in the central area of the neighborhood before peaking in the high $500,000s on its western edges.
Robotics club at Stevens High
Students begin their education at Black Hawk Elementary School, which has a C on Niche, before attending West Middle School, which has a B-minus. Finally, older kids enroll at Stevens High School, a B-plus-ranked school known for its athletics department and award-winning robotics club.
The Josey Wales at J.R.'s
Locals turn to J.R.’s Rhodehouse BBQ Pit for casual, Texas-style barbecue with menu items like brisket, turkey, pork and hot-link-filled Josey Wales sandwich. Seven miles south, shoppers head to the dozens of stores and restaurants at the Uptown Rapid mall. Big box stores like Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club are nearby in northwestern Rapid City.
A park that goes back in time
The neighborhood's natural scenery provides ample opportunity to appreciate the outdoors, but otherwise, the community lacks public parks. A 7-mile drive south will put locals at Dinosaur Park, a Rapid City institution named for the many concrete dinosaur statues that decorate its perch just off Skyline Drive. A trip to the park’s peak offers visitors a 360-degree view of the city, the Black Hills and the prairie.
Direct access to I-90
Interstate 90 is just east of the neighborhood, offering a convenient drive into downtown Rapid City, 7 miles south. Sturgis, home of the famous Motorcycle Rally, is 22 miles north, while the Rapid City Regional Airport is 20 miles southeast.
Shows at The Monument
The Monument is Rapid City’s biggest live venue, hosting the Rapid City Rush hockey team, touring shows, musicians and comedians. The city throws Summer Nights, a block party every Thursday evening in the summer months. Locals come to listen to regional bands and sample area food trucks.
Important to Know
Wildfires in South Dakota are not unheard of, and locals should familiarize themselves with the local fire danger levels.
The CAP Index Score considers Black Hawk very safe, putting it at 2/10 overall for crime, compared to the national average of 4/10.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
