An expansive community that meets rural living with suburbia
Buckingham, an unincorporated community east of Fort Myers, offers plenty of space amid a scenic, rural landscape. The community, which stretches out among the Lee County countryside, is located near Palm Beach Boulevard, the primary thoroughfare connecting the northeast portion of the county to the buzzy Fort Myers waterfront. “It’s rural living close to the city,” says Michael Tambunga, supervisor of the Buckingham Community Park. Also in the community’s heart is Florida Gulf Coast University’s Buckingham Center, so students venture in and out of this tucked-away community.
Harns is a preserve located on the eastern side of Buckingham with scenic waterway views.

Buckingham has a wide variety of housing options
Buckingham features long-established residences and newer construction on expansive lots amid sprawling farmlands. Between farms and undeveloped grassy areas are several housing developments. Remington Oaks is a 21st-century subdivision that comprises custom, 3,000-square-foot estates with Mediterranean influences for over $800,000. Buckingham Park is another subdivision with new traditional housing on quarter-acre lots for prices between $300,000 and $500,000. And between subdivisions are stand-alone homes on big, private lots. Many are custom ranch-style homes and contemporary bungalows with at least two to three acres of land. Depending on plot sizes, values can reach and exceed $1 million.

A day at Buckingham Community Park
The community features its share of attractions, most notably Buckingham Community Park, a sprawling recreational complex. “The park hosts a lot of activities,” Tambunga says. “It’s 236 acres in total, with 2 miles of trails into the woods, a pond for fishing and a dog park that’s busy seven days a week. Right across from that, we have four baseball fields, one regulation size and three for Little League, and three multipurpose fields for football and soccer. The park offers a lot for the community.” Locals enjoy more rural pursuits, like hiking, camping and horseback riding, at Buckingham Trails Preserve and Harns Marsh, which operates as a stormwater facility for the region but allows visitors to traverse much of its 600 acres. Another natural Florida attraction just outside Buckingham is Manatee Park.
