In the heart of Buffalo’s “Iron Island”
Lovejoy is known as Buffalo’s “Iron Island,” a nickname originating from the collection of railroads surrounding the neighborhood. Buffalo’s rich past in the rail industry can be seen throughout the area, from the train tracks that run alongside residential areas to the historic Buffalo Central Terminal that rises over the Lovejoy skyline. Once a gathering place for the families of industrial workers, Lovejoy has seen a recent resurgence for New York homebuyers looking for an accessible price tag. “Lovejoy was a very strong rental neighborhood, but 10, 15 years ago when the home values in Buffalo went up, people moved to Lovejoy because it was more of an entry-level home as far as price points. When houses in North Buffalo are 250,000, someone has the chance to own a house in Lovejoy for 100,000 or 150,000,” says Matthew Reitz, a Sales Agent with BNYP Properties.
Lovejoy homes reflect early 20th century styles
Many homes in the area were former industrial properties built between 1900 and 1930, and share design details with Cape Code and American Four Squares, such as simple shapes and dormer windows. Several properties are doubles and have 5 to 7 bedrooms that can be occupied by multiple families at once. Homes are rarely decorated the same way, with owners painting their porches fire engine-red or planting native scrubs alongside their front steps. “Lovejoy is a beautiful neighborhood with a great sense of community. There are a lot of homebuyers over there that have little cute gardens, and there’s a pride of ownership.” says Ayat Nieves, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Keller Williams Realty. Some homes are built on double lots that allow homebuyers to build additional driveways or garages alongside fenced-in backyards. Homes in the Lovejoy range between $100,000 to $170,000, while some older single-family homes can sell for under $100,000.
