In Newington Forest, you can be close to everything and nothing at the same time. “You feel like you are nestled into a neighborhood, but not far from anything you would need,” says Fairfax County Representative Frank Anderson. “It doesn’t feel like you’re 20 miles from D.C., you really get the feeling that you are out in nature.” With many homes being on at least a quarter of an acre, and plenty of locally owned businesses, it’s easy to get lost in the rural charm of Newington Forest.

Tri-level homes with four bedrooms start around $725,000, while large Colonials featuring five bedrooms range up to $1.1 million. While the majority of homes are detached, two-bedroom town homes are available for $400,000. With sidewalks on both sides of the street, Newington Forest is a great place to walk the dog or go for a bike ride. The homes feature driveways and garages, and have expansive lawns, perfect for those looking to try their hand at gardening. Winding streets lead to cul-de-sacs which provide quiet from the busy streets, and the mature, leafy trees add an extra layer of privacy. Anderson notes that the homeowners association has been around for a long time and puts money back into the neighborhood.

Students enter the Fairfax County Public School district at Newington Forest Elementary School. “Fairfax County Public Schools are well known,” says Anderson. “It’s one of the 10 biggest districts in the nation, but the schools are constantly getting high marks for performance.” Newington Forest, which holds a B-plus rating on Niche is also home to Angela Thompson, the 20020 Fairfax County Outstanding Principal of the Year. Kids then head to South County Middle School was built in 2012 and has an A rating on Niche. South County High also received an A rating on Niche and offers over 2,1000 computers to aid in the education process.

Locals are able to connect with nature with plenty of parks and trail options. Middle Run Stream Valley Park has a 3.8-mile trail that is perfect for running or hiking. Plenty of people bring their binoculars to try and spot some of Northern Virginia’s exotic birds while walking. The South Run Stream Valley Park offers a four-mile loop that is popular with hikers and cyclists. Feel free to bring your dog if they are leashed. Newington Heights Park is a popular spot for youth sporting events with baseball and softball fields. The venue also has plenty of tennis courts for residents looking to serve it up. Chapel Acres Park is a great spot to get shots up at an outdoor basketball court or take the kids to explore on the playground equipment.

Steak n’ Things is a popular lunch option known for flame-broiled hamburgers and subs. The steak and cheese is the headliner, but regulars also rave over the fajita wraps. Saratoga Pizza has something for everyone with hearty salads and large Italian entrees, but as the name suggests, the New York-style pizza and flatbread pizzas are fan favorites. Fuse Box combines various cuisines of different cultures to produce a unique Asian fusion taste. Mongolian lamb with onions and ramen noodle in pork bone broth are two of the specialties.

Collecting a week’s worth of groceries is easy with Giant Food located just off Highway 123. The chain provides known and trusted items to stock up the fridge. For a quick stop, Crosspointe Market has your daily needs covered. Stop in after work to pick up staples like eggs and milk or peruse the extensive craft beer and wine section. For all home needs, Costco is located just west of I-95.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
