Cultural destinations interspersed between winding suburban roads
Growing from an agricultural community to a booming midcentury retreat from New York City, the North Jersey neighborhood of Cedar Grove is a suburb that has seen change. It was even somewhat of a musical hotspot, when it played host to icons like Frank Sinatra at the Meadowbrook Ballroom. But today, even though local culture is more sparse, Cedar Grove stays active. Destinations range from the Montclair Art Museum on the south side to Montclair State University on the east and HBO character Tony Soprano’s mansion on the west. “Pompton Avenue is also where you’re going to see a lot of people,” says Rhonda Myers, interim pastor at the nearby First Presbyterian Church of Verona. “It has plenty of shopping opportunities, whether that’s getting groceries or checking out small businesses and restaurants.”
Cape Cods and townhouses from $450,000
Cedar Grove is full of gently curving residential streets in names such as Winding Way or Sunrise Terrace. Homes here include Cape Cods, ranch styles and split-levels, all tastefully maintained. In the Hilltop townhome community, modern townhomes include access to amenities such as a clubhouse with a fitness center, an outdoor pool and a grilling area. Single-owner home prices in Cedar Grove are typically between $450,000 and $750,000. Townhouses can start at $650,000. However, there are some larger five-bedroom homes that fall between $1 million and $1.5 million. The Cap Index crime score is a 1 out of 10. The national average is 4.
Traditional sports at Cedar Grove High
Neighborhood children can attend Cedar Grove Schools for their entire educational journey. There are two elementary schools in town, North End Elementary, a National Blue Ribbon School and South End Elementary. The former earns a B-plus rating from Niche, while the latter earns a B. Students then converge for fifth through eighth grade at Cedar Grove Memorial Middle, which receives a B as well. Then it’s on to Cedar Grove High, where the student-to-teacher ratio is 10-to-1. The school earns an overall B, and offers traditional sport programs like football, track, baseball, golf and wrestling.
West Essex Hiking Trail
When it comes to outdoor recreation in Cedar Grove, residents can hunker down at one of the many pocket parks or roam around on sprawling green spaces. The West Essex Hiking Trail slices through the township, providing convenience for residents to hop on and off the trail where they please. Cedar Grove Community Park is just off the trail, not far from the central thoroughfare of Pompton Avenue. It has athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts and a pool. There’s even a natural spring available to gather drinking water. Mills Reservation is more expansive with 157 wooded acres – and scenic spots where visitors can catch a view of New York City.

Shopping and dining on Pompton Avenue
Shopping and dining for residents occurs primarily along Pompton Avenue, which runs north-south through the length of the neighborhood. There’s a CVS and a Fresh Grocer supermarket. Dining options can seem traditional on the face of it – coffee shops and Italian restaurants – but digging in, there are some hidden treasures. Cedar Bean's Coffee Joint whips up specialty drinks such as the Cinnamon Roll Espresso, made with homemade cinnamon syrup, white chocolate and steamed milk. Spaces like these tend to double as community destinations; the coffee shop hosts monthly art galleries and concerts. When Cedar Grove resident Tommy Devito, quarterback for the New York Giants, became known for enjoying chicken cutlets, neighborhood restaurants like Lombardi’s and Esposito’s created sandwiches and pizzas in his honor.

Commuting on I-80, by bus
Pompton may be a commercial corridor frequented by foodies, but it’s also a good place for residents to pick up a bus. Cedar Grove is about 20 miles from New York, readily accessible by nearby Interstate 80. Pedestrians aren’t left out, either: They have the West Essex Hiking Trail that traverses the width of the neighborhood. Residents on the east end are close enough to walk to the commuter train stations in Montclair; otherwise, these are just a short drive away for most residents.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
