A taste of the country, 10 miles from the city
Meadowbrook, about 10 miles from Downtown Richmond, is a place spread out and slowed down. The area mainly consists of subdivisions and cul-de-sacs, with wide streets shaded by a mature tree canopy. Outside residential enclaves, above-ground powerlines cast shadows onto country roads. Driving through, folks won’t see much, aside from some churches, farmhouses on a few acres and the occasional small shopping center. But that’s how locals like it – spread out and remote along two-lane roads.
Meadowbrook, about 10 miles from Downtown Richmond, Virginia, is a vibrant community.

Meadowbrook Country Club and Pocahontas State Park
Residents can become members of Meadowbrook Country Club, whose 18-hole golf course is a favorite in the Richmond area. When they aren’t spending time on the fairways, folks can grab dinner from the clubhouse, exercise in the fitness center or sign their kids up for a swim team. Families are used to sitting under the lights at nearby Stratton and Ukrops parks, whose turf fields host an assortment of youth sporting leagues. Locals love Meadowbrook’s proximity to Pocahontas State Park, which spans nearly 8,000 acres. Here, kids go to the swimming pool in the summers, families camp on the weekends, bikers and hikers traverse wooded trails and teenagers fish and kayak until the park closes at dusk. “In high school, I was a lifeguard at Pocahontas State Park, and people came out from all over Chesterfield to swim,” says Casey Green, who was raised in Chesterfield County, not far from Meadowbrook. “I remember spending a lot of time there when I was a kid – fishing with my friends or going hiking with my family. We even used to have cross-country meets there.”

Getting around Meadowbrook
“The great thing about this area is all the backroads,” Green says. “Life spreads out here, and things feel remote. Even though it might take a little while to get to things, it’s a nice drive through the country.” Locals also have easy access to Virginia State routes 288 and 150, which lead throughout Richmond and Chesterfield County. And when it’s time to fly, the Chesterfield County Airport is in the southern part of Meadowbrook.

Amenities along Iron Bridge Road
There’s not much dining or shopping in Meadowbrook, but a short drive down Iron Bridge Road – the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare – leads further into Chesterfield, where recent construction has brought lots of new dining options. “About 5 years ago, there were essentially a few Mexican restaurants, pizza places and grocery stores. That was about it. Now, we have a Chipotle, a Starbucks, a First Watch… things are really coming up around here,” Green says. Closer to home, residents can head to Irongate Village Shopping Center and grab groceries from Food Lion or dinner from Bella Italia, serving Italian cuisine. Nearby Meadowdale Shopping Center also has a Food Lion, as well as Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Marshall’s for discount shoppers. And around the top half of the neighborhood sits Meadowbrook Plaza, where Walmart Neighborhood Market supplies everyday essentials, and Ocean Crab House serves Cajun seafood.

Eating funnel cake at Chesterfield County Fair
Locals are just across Virginia State Route 288 from the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds – where the annual end-of-summer county fair is held. In late August, mouths get sticky from sweet cotton candy; first dates start on Ferris wheels; children stand on tiptoes, looking over iron fences and haybales, to see the petting zoo; and twenty-somethings grab drinks and play carnival games.
