Greek cultural hub in the West Loop
The five city blocks that make up Chicago’s iconic Greektown neighborhood have a history spanning over 150 years in the city's Near West Side. The story begins in the 1870s, as Chicago recovered from the devastating fires of 1871 and the city’s relatively new Greek community played a role in the the recovery. However, many of Greektown’s original tavernas, storefronts and homes are no more— the construction of a local college campus and the Eisenhower Expressway in the 1960s, together with America’s mass suburbanization, displaced the immigrant populations to its current spot along Halsted Street. A new Greek museum and an urban renewal program in the 2010s helped restore the cultural vibrancy that was once nearly extinguished and integrate the community into the surrounding downtown.
Today, Greektown serves as both a cultural hub and a convenient home for Chicagoans looking to be near all things West Loop—from a popular local park to busier shopping districts. “This neighborhood right now is a very, very hot place; the city is moving here,” says Stathis Theoharis, one of the proprietors behind 9 Muses Bar & Grill, a family-owned institution. “The younger generation is great, and they’re trying to support all the Greek businesses here.”
Generations-strong restaurants, from Greek Islands to Nine Muses
Among the Grecian columns, flags and banners advertising Greek heritage events are a handful of businesses that have stayed in the same families for generations. The atmosphere at Greek Islands recalls that of the Aegean Islands’ tavernas as waiters set pans of Saganaki cheese on fire at the tableside. Athena Greek Restaurant includes outdoor patio seating with downtown views, while 9 Muses pairs traditional fare with signature cocktails. Mr. Greek Gyros dishes out Greek-American orders to-go to locals and University of Illinois Chicago students 24 hours a day. A multi-story Mariano’s is on the corner of Halsted and West Monroe Street for groceries. A Whole Foods Market is a little farther north. H Mart Chicago sits across Interstate 90 on Jackson Boulevard, all within a mile on foot. The busy warehouse storefronts of the Fulton Market District is also less than a mile north of Greektown.
Mr Greek Gyros serves Greek-American fare like gyros, burgers, hot dogs, and fries.
Greektown residents can choose from a variety of grocery stores, like Whole Foods and Mariano's.

West Loop apartments and condos overlooking a cultural hub
Along Halsted Avenue and a few of its parallel roads, buildings are adorned with decorated flowerpots, Hellenic sidewalk statues and storefronts with English and Greek signage beneath loft apartments and condos. The neighborhood is built up with over 50 percent apartments but also has an almost even split between renters and owners. “It's also the West Loop, but south of the main strips, so it’s a little less busy and more residential,” says Mike Battista, Vice President of sales at Jameson Sotheby's International Realty who sells condos in Greektown and the wider West Loop. “The busy restaurant district is still just a few blocks away, but it’s a little quieter to live.” Options range from renovated one-bed, one-bath lofts with timber-beamed ceilings or exposed brick to sleek new builds with floor-to-ceiling windows, rows of balconies and amenities like fitness centers. Many buildings also come with single garage spaces, covered or uncovered. Prices start between $285,000 and $455,000 for one- to two-bedroom loft units and hike up to $620,000 to $695,000 for units that have over 2,000 square feet of space or more proximity to Mary Bartleme Park. New construction complexes with three- to four-bedroom luxury units make up the top range at $945,000 to $1.5 million.
Luxury units in new condos can range in price from $945,000 to $1.5 million in Greektown.

A rare West Loop park and the National Hellenic Museum
Kids can also enjoy the playground at Mary Bartelme Park, while adults can marvel at its sculptures and natural scenery. “One issue in the West Loop is the lack of parks,” Battista says. “There’s a huge park by Skinner Elementary School, but it’s 4 or 5 blocks west of [Greektown]. So it’s nice to have a park right there.” The former includes ball fields and open space. Greektown is also home to the National Hellenic Museum, established to share the history of America’s Greek community and the significant role this group has played in the formation of Chicago’s unique cultural fabric. Cold winters in the Windy City mean recreation turns indoors at facilities like Brooklyn Boulders’ rock climbing gym in its West Loop location. There are also a couple of private gyms in and around the neighborhood, including Orangetheory Fitness, All in Motion and Title Boxing Club.
There are gorgeous holiday decorations in Mary Bartelme Park.
Monuments honoring Greek culture tower next to the National Hellenic Museum.

Walking to essentials, nearby L stops or Union Station
Greektown holds a Walk Score of 97 out of 100, with shops, university facilities, Credit Union 1 Ampitheater and Chicago Union Station all within a mile of the neighborhood. Six of the city’s 11 Metra commuter rail lines converge at Union Station. “It’s a little west of the city, so you’re not accessing the L as much as east, but still a fair amount," Battista says. The closest L stops are UIC-Halsted on the Blue Line and Morgan Station on the Green Line and Pink Line. Residents can reach Chicago O’Hare International Airport in about 50 minutes on the Blue Line. The Illinois Medical District is located southwest of the community, with university hospitals like RUSH University Medical Center and UI Health serving the West Loop. Greektown is also tucked beside the Jane Byrne Interchange, which sees over 400,000 vehicles per day on Interstate 94 and the Eisenhower Expressway. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the interchange ranks as the most congested interchange in the country. Sports fanatics take advantage of one more Greektown staple: the United Center Shuttle Greektown Trolley, which travels to and from home games at the United Center for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks.

Street food and entertainment on Halstead Avenue
Halsted Ave is flooded with smells from cooking tents by 10 a.m. each day of the Taste of Greektown Festival, the largest Hellenic celebration in the city and a tradition of over three decades. Visitors enjoy street food like char-grilled souvlaki and watch a gyro eating contest, bands on the main stage and traditional dance shows. Floats for Chicago’s Greek Orthodox churches, Greek schools and more make their way down the street during the Greek Independence Day parade each spring.
The Greek Heritage Parade occurs in Greektown every spring to celebrate Greek independence.
Visitors enjoy a variety of meats fresh off the spit at Taste of Greektown.
