The evolution of Chicago's West Loop neighborhood over the last two decades will sound familiar to any big city dweller. Once an industrial district where meatpackers labored and prewar warehouses were used for commercial food storage, today, the West Loop is a place where people work and play after work. The brick warehouses have been repurposed into condominiums and office space for a growing number of tech companies. West Loop is just across the Adams Street Bridge from the popular Chicago Loop, where residents can kayak in the Chicago River, attend music festivals at Millenium Park, check out exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and see Broadway shows at the Chicago Theater. According to the local neighborhood organization Neighbors of West Loop, the neighborhood is comprised of six individual districts.

West Loop Gate
West Loop Gate and the Fulton River District occupy the neighborhood's east side and are bracketed by the Kennedy Expressway on the west and the Chicago River to the east. The West Loop Gate is where most of the offices are, along with some newer high-end condos. This makes it quieter than other parts of the West Loop. "Pretty much everything from great restaurants to shopping outlets is within walking distance from your door when you live in West Loop Gate," says Realtor Jodi Slutzky, a 15-year resident. West Loop Gate is the site of the 1886 Haymarket Affair, where a labor protest turned deadly. Today, a monument stands in its place. This district is also the site of Chicago's two busiest transport hubs, the Ogilvie Transportation Center, where Metra commuter lines converge, and iconic Union Station, where L train lines meet. When the sun is shining, locals venture out to Heritage Green Park with its trademark statue from Chicago's sister city of Galway, Ireland. Omakase Yume is down the street, a lauded Japanese restaurant known for 16-course dinners. Home buyers will find one-bedroom condos in new buildings for between $225,000 and $350,000. At the top end of the market, penthouse duplexes in recently constructed high-rises are listed for around $1 million. In the middle of all this newness is Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church, which has been performing Sunday Mass since 1846. The pre-kindergarten through 8th grade Frances Xavier Warde School is a Catholic institution nearby that received an A-plus on Niche.
There are brick midrise condo buildings with access to public transportation in West Loop Gate.
Duplexes such as this add character to the corners of the streets of West Loop.

The Fulton River District
The Fulton River District is north of West Loop Gate and bleeds into the West Town neighborhood. Between its high rises and the Chicago River stands River Point Park. At 1.5 acres, this is the largest riverfront park in Downtown Chicago. Public sculptures and benches strewn throughout botanical gardens of native plants make this a frequent respite for office workers. The pink and green lines of the L stop here at the Clinton station. Sunnygun and Moneygun are sister spots under the L train. At Sunnygun, diners can get a creative sampling of Americana. The thirsty can go around back to drink cocktails in red leather chairs in the dim speakeasy Moneygun. The massive Metra Market Space straddles Fulton River District and West Loop Gate, offering visitors a dizzying variety of local and global food and grocery options. And there's a Jewel-Osco on the north side of the district. Bennett Day School is right on the other side of Kennedy Expressway. This pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade school for the arts received an A-plus grade on Niche.

Restaurant Row
Restaurant Row, a hotspot in Chicago's celebrated restaurant scene, is on the west side of the Kennedy Expressway. This area along Randolph Street is inside the Fulton Market District and was named a Chicago Landmark in 2015. "They're keeping a little of the old industrial architecture," says Adriana Rosales of the new Soho House Chicago in the West Loop, "but it's mostly a restaurant district now, and there's a lot of new construction around." Soho House and CH Distillery & Cocktail Bar opened shortly after the Chicago Transit Authority opened a new L train stop nearby along its green line, which runs through the district. Last year, the hit FX television series The Bear brought nationwide fame to the chef/owner of two West Loop restaurants, Grace, winner of three Michelin Stars, and Ever, the chef's newest venture after Grace closed. Two blocks from Ever, Smyth won three Michelin Stars for its locally sourced tasting menu. West Loop Market has two branches for groceries in the district. There's a great deal of housing in West Loop, most of which is in this area. Lest buyers think this means less competition, consider garage parking spaces are selling for $10,000 to $50,000. At the bottom of the price range, one-bedroom condos in newly remodeled prewar factories are listed for between $250,000 and $300,000. Loft-like one- to two-bedroom units with window walls, new appliances, and dedicated parking spaces in newly built or remodeled midrise buildings are listed between $350,000 and $850,000. At the high end, buyers will find condos in buildings of varying degrees of luxury, such as a 2019 five-bedroom duplex penthouse with subzero appliances and a private wraparound balcony for $5 million.
Make sure to swing down to the Good Bus for some great music at the West Loop Art Fest.

Jackson Boulevard District
South of Restaurant Row, there's the Jackson Boulevard District and Greektown. The blue line of the L runs alongside these neighborhoods, above the Eisenhower Expressway. Both will take travelers to O'Hare International Airport in under an hour. The most notable restaurant in the Jackson Boulevard District is SoJu BBQ, which serves organic meat and is popular with people heading to the United Center for a concert or a Chicago Bulls game. West Loop public schools are in the Jackson Boulevard District. Mark Skinner Elementary School received an A-plus from Niche and offers students an afterschool chess program. The school is next to Skinner Park. This 7-acre green space in view of the skyline has sporting fields and courts, a community garden, and allows residents to use the pool and gym next door in Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Whitney High also scored an A-plus on Niche and is ranked among Illinois's top five public high schools. Union Park is a 14-acre green space with a swimming pool and afterschool programs for students.
United Center is a hotspot of sports and events near West Loop.
Whitney Young Magnet School in West Loop is ranked #4 in best public high schools in Illinois.

Greektown
University of Illinois, Chicago is just south of Greektown, providing opportunities for residents to enjoy arts and culture programming and the bright energy students bring to a neighborhood. Despite the changes in West Loop, Greektown retains its cultural heritage. Diners come from all over to traditional Mediterranean restaurants like Greek Islands to enjoy delicious, if campy, flaming saganaki, a sheep's milk cheese that one's waiter lights on fire tableside.
