Natural seclusion at the heart of Lapeer County
Deep in rural Lapeer County, the community of Barnes Lake offers a nature-immersed getaway from the big-city action of nearby Flint and Lapeer. Life here revolves around Barnes Lake, a private, manmade lake open for fishing, powerboating and beachgoing. Though Barnes Lake was first settled in 1839, its housing stock is primarily from the mid-20th century, and its homes offer immediate access to the lake or tree-shaded seclusion. Whether it’s in the form of a fishing trip, a house in the forest or a camping excursion, Barnes Lake offers quiet and nature-centric lifestyles to its residents.
A manmade lake is at the center of Barnes Lake life
The lake around which the community revolves was created in 1926 through the damming of Crystal Creek’s many ponds, and it has since become an oasis of outdoor activities. Branded by the community as an all-sports environment, Barnes Lake is open for watercraft from 10 AM to 8 PM, with powerboating being just as common a pursuit as fishing. Residents must be members of the Barnes Lake Club to access the boat launch, as well as this lake’s beach and swimming areas. Along Lapeer Road, two campsites offer venues for outdoor adventures. The Kings Landing Kampground makes Millers Lake available for beachgoing, lakeside cookouts and boating. This area’s wealth of nature is also utilized by church groups who occasionally take part in retreats at the Crystal Creek Christian Campgrounds.
Ranch-style homes surround Barnes Lake
Though Barnes Lake was founded in 1928, the majority of its houses were built from the 1950s to 1980s. Ranch-style and split-level properties can sell for between $260,000 and $540,000, while manufactured homes range from $169,000 to $229,000. Most houses were built on lakeside lots and include yard space for stashing boats and campers ahead of the next excursion. Others sit at least a block away from the shore and, though they may be over a half-century old, they frequently feature remodeled roofs and kitchens. Barnes Lake is quiet not just because of its remote location; its CAP Index score of 1 indicates a minimal risk of crime.
Local businesses fulfill multiple purposes
Because of Barnes Lake’s rural location, retail options are limited. Hilltop Grocery doubles as the local convenience store and pizzeria, selling fish bait as well as $1 pizza slices. Down Lapeer Road, the Italian Village Market fulfills a similar all-purposes role, selling pizza as well as spirits. Up that same road, the Deerfield Inn serves up hearty breakfasts and classic diner fare. Bryan’s Supermarket, situated on the corner of Lapeer and Burnside Roads, offers a comprehensive selection of grocery products while also serving as the local pharmacy, dry cleaner and UPS drop-off.
Future-focused education at North Branch High
Students can start their education at North Branch Elementary School, which receives a B-plus rating from Niche, before attending the B-rated Ruth Fox Middle School. North Branch High School, which receives a B-minus, offers dual enrollment and vocational training programs to prepare its alumni for their college and career futures.
Quick access to healthcare
Barnes Lake’s location along State Route 24 connects it to Lapeer 15 minutes to the south as well as Flint 35 minutes to the west. Despite Barnes Lake’s remote location, healthcare is always close to home, from Barnes Lake’s own Ascent Family Care clinic to the North Branch Family HealthCare hospital 15 minutes around the corner in North Branch.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
