A vibrant riverfront community in the heart of Columbus

In Uptown, the friendly vibe that defines Columbus is front and center. Children are playing, musicians are busking and friends are laughing as they catch up on one of the benches that line Broadway. Overlooking the Chattahoochee River and neighboring Phenix City, the community owes much of its life to Columbus State University. “CSU transformed the area over the last few decades,” says Realtor Michael Terrell with Keller Williams Realty. Terrell has 4 years of real estate experience and previously owned a business in the area for over 13 years. “They’ve built up condos and apartments for student housing, and the College of the Arts built facilities like The Bo Bartlett Center and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. The investment CSU put into Uptown really helped transform it into what it is today.” Considered the heart of Columbus, residents from across the city descend onto Uptown for its events, riverfront parks and wealth of dining and retail.

Home to the world's largest urban whitewater rapid course

Uptown offers direct access to the Chattahoochee River. Residents are just walking distance from Woodruff Park, home to Columbus icon Kadie the Cow. The park has a splash pad and playground and connects to RushSouth Whitewater Park. RushSouth offers low-flow whitewater rafting and higher-intensity rapids. "The river is definitely one of the more popular things to do," says Realtor Mia Manns with Coldwell Banker and Kennon, Parker, Duncan & Davis. Manns has nearly 20 years of experience. "At RushSouth, there's a zipline that goes to Phenix City, fly fishing, kayaking and floating. The river is a big deal here." Realtor Alison Cox with Keller Williams Realty agrees. "It's just the perfect spot to enjoy the river," Cox says. Cox has nearly 20 years of real estate experience. "It used to be that fishing and kayaking were the main things people did here, but now there's so much to do. The splash pad is popular too; there are always lots of kids there in the summer." Cox notes that biking along the Riverwalk also brings a lot of people to Uptown. "You can bike from Uptown all the way to Fort Benning," Cox says.

Plentiful dining, retail and entertainment in Uptown

Over the years, Uptown’s restaurant scene has developed into one of the city’s defining features. Saltcellar offers upscale seafood dishes, and The Animal Farm is known for its cocktails and smoked brisket pasta. Residents can also grab a latte at Fountain City Coffee or get an after-work drink at Hotel Indigo's rooftop bar. For a sweet treat, My Boulange’s decadent pastries are a must. The Loft is perfect for a nightcap while catching a local comedian or blues band.In addition to its restaurants, Uptown offers several events throughout the year. "Market Days on Broadway is one of my favorites," Manns says. "They close down the street on Saturdays and there's local music. You can get a drink from one of the restaurants and bring it out to enjoy while you listen. There are also produce, food and craft vendors; it's really fun." Manns also notes Toast of the Town, a tasting event with vendors from local restaurants and breweries. The event also has a silent auction, with proceeds going to local charities. The historic Springer Opera House and the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts offer musicals, plays, bands and orchestra productions. Residents can also go across the river to catch a show at the Phenix City Amphitheater.Uptown also features independently owned shops and boutiques. JudyBug's Books features new, used and rare selections, while Ride On Bikes is a bike store with rental options and a juice bar. The Posh Peach is an independent women's clothing boutique, and Three Dog Bakery is a pet supply store with house-made dog treats. For groceries, there’s a Piggly Wiggly nearby on 13th Street in Phenix City and a Publix 3 miles east at Cross Country Plaza.

Uptown features warehouse lofts with scenic river views

Buyers looking to live in Uptown will primarily find loft-style condos in renovated warehouse buildings. Like those in the Eagle & Phenix Mills building, many lofts overlook the Chattahoochee rapids or busy Uptown streets. These lofts typically feature exposed brick, 12-foot ceilings, large windows and occasionally a balcony showcasing those scenic views. The Eagle & Phenix Mills condos have amenities like parking with security, a green space, a fitness room and a staircase leading to the 15-mile Riverwalk. Prices here typically cost between $215,000 and $240,000 for a one-bedroom unit and between $300,000 and $700,000 for a two or three-bedroom unit. Uptown is also a popular rental area for students and young professionals, with apartment prices ranging between $1,500 and $3,000.
