Waterfront living in Coronado
Silver Strand generally refers to the south end of Coronado, home to Silver Strand State Beach. However, most residents would say they live in Coronado Cays, the main community in Silver Strand. Realtor Frances MacCartee with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, who was born and raised in Coronado, says, "Coronado has three main communities: the Village by North Island, the Shores in the middle and the Cays to the south. The big draw to the Cays is that almost every home has waterfront and a private dock, so it's made for activity." Most of its rows of homes are intertwined with the water on the island's bayside, providing maximum waterfront and resort-style living. "Each area of the Cays has a clubhouse with a pool, and the community even has a bayside beach for when Silver Strand State Beach gets crowded across the road," says MacCartee. Shopping is about 5 miles north in Coronado Village or south in Imperial Beach, but residents consider this a worthwhile trade for the amenities and laid-back lifestyle in Coronado Cays.
The Silver Strand stretches from Imperial Beach to Coronado.

Townhomes and mansions with private docks
Coronado Cays was primarily developed in the 1980s. Aside from a few streets of homes, most are directly on the water. The majority are single-family Mediterranean Revivals and townhouses. "The prices aren't low, but the condos and townhouses here give some lower-priced waterfront options than people could find in Coronado Village," says MacCartee. These waterfront townhouses have less space than the single-family options but still offer private docks and a closer walk to the bayside beachfront and Coronado Cays Yacht Club. They can range from just under $1 million to $3 million. Mediterranean Revivals that aren't on the water start at a slightly higher price point, ranging from $2 million to $3 million. Most waterfront Mediterranean Revivals have three to four bedrooms and range from $3 million to over $5 million. Prices are highest at the end of the streets, where palatial Mediterranean-inspired homes and modern 2020s mansions with panoramic views can cost $8 million to $10 million. Some of the most expansive of these homes can reach almost $50 million.

Walk to Coronado Cays Park and the beach
Coronado Cays Park is in the middle of the community. It's one of the only spaces on Coronado that offers athletic fields and courts, so folks come from a few miles in each direction for soccer and baseball practices, while residents only have a short walk. The park also has a playground, tennis and pickleball courts, open lawn space and a paved walking loop. Silver Strand State Beach is just across Highway 75, but it has been closed due to contamination from toxic waste leaks a few miles south. Even in normal circumstances, residents often take advantage of Grand Caribe Shoreline Park on the community's bayside to avoid Silver Strand's crowded shores. This space offers a bit of quiet beachfront and a small green space for waterfront recreation. Coronado Cays Yacht Club is on the north side of Grand Caribe Shoreline Park. Many residents belong to this private club to have a place to dock or to have access to the restaurant, pool and waterfront views.
Less busy than the Silver Strand's ocean beach, the bay beach is dog friendly too.

Dine at Calypso Café and shop a short drive away
Calypso Café is the neighborhood's only restaurant. This bayside eatery is a short walk, drive or boat ride from any home in Coronado Cays. They have casual indoor seating and a waterfront porch where they serve traditional breakfast and lunch items. Residents can also grab a coffee and bagel to-go in the morning or a bottle of wine from the small market in the afternoon. The Crown Landing restaurant at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort is a slightly more formal option on the north side of the community. Residents drive 4 miles south for necessities from the Grocery Outlet in Imperial Beach. Coronado Village has a broader selection of restaurants and shopping 5 miles north. Coronado Cays' limited commercial activity contributes to its low 1 out of 10 CAP Index crime score, compared to the national average of 4 out of 10.

North Island Naval Air Station just over 5 miles north
Many residents move here to settle down after a life of commuting, but those who still drive to work have a short trip to San Diego's naval employers. North Island Naval Air Station is just over 5 miles north on Highway 75, and Silver Strand Training Complex is only a couple of miles south. San Diego Naval Base and downtown San Diego are about 10 miles away, across the bay. Commuters can also take the bus from a few stops on Highway 75. San Diego International Airport is less than 15 miles north for longer trips.
The Bayshore Bikeway is a famous trail dedicated to cycling.

Nearby beaches closed for water contamination
Several San Diego beaches, including Silver State Beach, have been closed for an prolonged period due to high bacteria levels from a toxic waste leak near the U.S.-Mexico border. The city encourages swimmers and surfers to avoid going in the water until it has been deemed safe. Grand Caribe Shoreline Park, on the neighborhood's bayside, has not been formally closed. Still, residents should stay aware of city updates on bacteria levels.
