One of Dale City’s earliest commuter neighborhoods
In a community known for its proximity to Washington, D.C., Darbydale offers quiet suburbia just minutes from Interstate 95 and several major shopping centers. In the 1960s, Darbydale was the fourth of more than a dozen neighborhoods built in Dale City. This Woodbridge suburb, about 30 miles south of D.C., was developed alphabetically with ‘dale’ at the end of each neighborhood name. “Dale City was literally built along Interstate 95 for commuters,” says Beth Grant, a Realtor with Samson Properties who has sold several homes in the area. “If the neighborhood name is at the beginning of the alphabet, then you live closer to the highway.” Aside from the city, locals can also drive to Prince William Forest Park, a camping and hiking hub, and several regional shopping centers, like the open-air Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center.

Darbydale homes can have large lawns
Homes built between the 1960s and '90s dot Darbydale’s winding asphalt roads. Colonial Revivals often sit on quarter-acre lots adorned with ornamental shrubs. American elm trees shade split foyers and ranch styles, typically made of red-brick and vinyl facades. Houses usually have three to five bedrooms and driveways. Buying here can cost between $465,000 and $600,000, a range similar to a Prince William County home’s average $550,000 selling price.

Darbydale is near Interstate 95
Though some streets in Darbydale have sidewalks, it’s still a car-dependent community. I-95 is less than 3 miles east of the neighborhood. Washington, D.C., is another 25-mile drive north on the highway, though Grant warns that traffic can make that drive take over an hour. “The commute is brutal, but people still do it,” she says. “After work on a Friday, you can sit in traffic for like an hour and barely move an inch.” Commuters can park at the OmniRide Commuter Lot, 3 miles east, to ride a bus into D.C. or hop in a carpool to drive on I-95’s HOV lanes. A few OmniRide bus stops are also in the neighborhood on Darbydale Avenue and Dale Boulevard. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is the closest hospital, 4 miles east, and the Rippon train station is 6 miles in the same direction. The station follows the Virginia Railway Express’s Fredericksburg Line, reaching Union Station in under 2 hours. Dulles International Airport is a 40-mile drive to the northwest, while the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is less than 30 miles northeast.
Groceries at a Dale City intersection and proximity to Stoneridge at Potomac Town Center
Less than 2 miles north of the neighborhood, the intersection of Dale Boulevard and Minnieville Road is home to numerous shopping strips with grocery stores including Giant and Safeway, as well as Petco. Fast-food drive-throughs like Wendy’s and Taco Bell, and a few locally owned spots, are in the same area. Whole chickens spin on a spit behind the red counter at KikiRiki, where Peruvian food is served on Styrofoam plates. Even with proximity to this intersection, Grant says people still drive about 3 miles east to Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center. “It’s a walkable shopping center, and it has the only Apple store within a 30-mile radius.” As shoppers walk along the Stoneridge’s sidewalks, they can pop into other retailers like Carhartt, REI and Warby Parker. Potomac Mills is an indoor mall in the same area with over 100 retailers, from Nike to Bloomingdale’s. Big-box stores like IKEA and Walmart Supercenter sit in the parking lot, but Grant says the mall is less popular with locals. “It’s easy to go grocery shopping on weekdays,” she says. “But once the weekend rolls around, most people in the area try to avoid shopping there because it just gets way too busy.”

Nearby indoor recreation and camping at Prince William Forest Park
Darbydale is near several indoor community hubs, like the Dale City Library, 2 miles north of the neighborhood. Toddlers and parents gather in the kids’ section for story times every Wednesday. Other regular events include painting classes and a book club for adults. The Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center is in a red-brick building down the street. Kids can take ballet classes in the dance studio or play in the Dale City Little League on the baseball diamond outside. Blue and white tiling surrounds the indoor lap lane pool, which holds adult water aerobics and youth swim classes. Grant says people also drive 12 miles south to the 15,000-acre Prince William Forest Park. “It’s the largest park in the county. People love to go camping and hiking there at the beginning of fall when the leaves are changing.” At the beginning of World War II, the Office of Strategic Services used the area’s lush landscape as a training ground for spies as they learned to decipher codes, detonate explosives and gather intelligence. Today, hikers and bikers can trek the park’s 37 miles of trailway, covered in yellow poplar and red maple trees. Campers will find grounds for tents, RVs, and five cabins to rent.
Prince William Forest Park is a popular spot for nature lovers to escape in Triangle Virginia.
