An older Decatur neighborhood with a prime location
Situated near Decatur’s downtown, West Decatur may not have the historical significance of its neighboring communities, but it's nearly as old, having been established in the 1880s. Mostly residential, it's filled with single-family houses dating from the 1940s through the 1960s. “The prices are the main selling point,” says Janelle Brown, an agent with Re Li Properties. “Homes can be half of what they cost other places.” While West Decatur has few restaurants and stores, it's close to the bustling downtown, with dining and shopping districts.
Bungalows and cottages fill the neighborhood
Oak trees dot the streets of the neighborhood, where bungalows and cottages are prominent and range from $130,000 to $170,000. Ranch-style homes can go from $120,000 to $180,000. Fixer-uppers typically range from $60,000 to $140,000. Many homes purchased as investment properties and turned into rentals. The community only has sidewalks on its main roads, but smaller streets are wide enough to make walking possible.
Decatur Middle has competitive robotics
Students are served by Decatur City Schools. Banks-Caddell Elementary School earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Decatur Middle School, which scores a B, fields competitive robotics teams so students can learn problem-solving and critical thinking. Decatur High School gets an A-minus score.
Nash Barbecue serves the classics
Moulton Street is a busy street that runs through the neighborhood and where many businesses are located. They include Family Dollar and Dollar General for essentials and for dining, there's Nash Barbecue, which has served the community since 1999 in the form of sauced-up chicken, pork and catfish. Nearby, Country Tacos has a mix of Tex-Mex dishes. Downtown's 609 Social Market & Provisions serves American cuisine and lets customers buy fresh fish and other goods to take home. A Walmart Neighborhood Market is nearby and a Walmart Supercenter is about 4 miles south.
Huntsville International Airport is a short drive
The neighborhood is less than 2 miles from downtown Decatur, and Huntsville is around a 25-mile drive via Interstate 565. Decatur Morgan Hospital is less than 3 miles away and Huntsville International Airport is about 15 miles away. There is limited public transportation in Decatur via NARCOG Transit, with rides requiring 24-hours advance notice.
Nearby Delano Park
The Carrie Matthews Recreation Center has been closed for some time, but there is a seasonal pool and basketball courts next door. Nearby parks include Delano Park, which has more than 400 legacy trees on its 28 acres, as well as a playground, splash pad and tennis and basketball courts. About 6 miles away is Point Mallard Park, a city-run space with a golf course, seasonal water park and campgrounds. Abutting West Decatur is the Decatur City Cemetery, the resting place of several prominent local politicians as well as soldiers from the Civil War. The cemetery has been in operation since 1855 and has been well-kept, according to John Allison, the archivist at the Morgan County Archives.
Nearby attractions include The Princess Theatre, open since 1919 and featuring live performances in a venue given an art deco facelift in 1941. Carnegie Visual Arts Center has free admission and showcases local and international artists.
Carnegie Carnival takes over downtown Decatur
Point Mallard Park hosts several events throughout the year, including the Wet Dog Triathlon, which has been held since 2000. In downtown Decatur, Carnegie Carnival is a multi-event celebration akin to Mardi Gras that benefits the Carnegie Visual Arts Center. The celebration runs each winter and spring.
