A historic neighborhood in the heart of Denver

Whittier borrows its name from John Greenleaf Whittier, an abolitionist, poet and founding member of the Republican Party. What began as a rapidly growing 19th-century suburb inhabited by rail workers and shopkeepers has transformed into a vibrant community within Denver's urban core. Unfortunately, like many racially diverse communities in early America, Whittier faced its share of adversity, including discriminatory practices like redlining and disinvestment. Despite this, Whittier remains one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Denver. "It's a tight-knit community," says Realtor Garrett Dinnel with Keller Williams, "and one of the better-established historic neighborhoods in the area." Whittier's pocket parks and long-time gathering places expand upon to this neighborhood's charm. However, many residents point to the community's location -- being just 2 miles from downtown Denver -- and its unique architectural offerings as additional appeals.

Italianate homes, Denver Squares and Craftsman bungalows

In Whittier, homes flank narrow, sidewalk-lined streets on which many residents park. Many properties here were built between the 1870s and 1920s, and reflect Italianate or Queen Anne designs. However, at the turn of the century, the community's architectural scene shifted as classic Denver Squares and Craftsman bungalows began to pop up throughout the area. Prices largely depend on the property's size, age and condition. Smaller designs can range from $600,000 to $900,000, while some of the community's larger homes start at upwards of $900,000 and can sell for as much as $1.4 million. The median sales price settles at just under $900,000, which is higher than Denver's median of around $600,000. Regardless of having higher-than-average prices for the area, homes here sell fast, after an average of just 22 days on the market, compared to the national average of 44 days.

Fuller Park, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams Park, George Morrison Sr. Park and City Park

Whittier is home to Fuller Park, one of Denver’s oldest green spaces. This park features a fenced-in, sandy area for dogs, a playground and a basketball court. The community is also home to a few other go-to neighborhood recreational spaces, many of which are named after influential Black people. These small green spaces include Dr. Daniel Hale Williams Park, named after the first person to perform an open-heart surgery; and George Morrison Sr. Park, which borrows its name from a famous jazz musician. The former features basketball courts and a playground, while the latter offers a paved path and a grassy expanse that makes for perfect picnics. About 2 miles away, City Park spans over 300 acres, making it Denver’s largest park. The park boasts everything from the award-winning Denver Zoo to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to the City Park Golf Course. It offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline and the Rocky Mountains in the distance. The park also hosts a number of gatherings, including the City Park Farmer’s Market, which is held each Saturday from early May to late October.

Whittier Cafe, Sweet Sweetz, Ephemeral Rotating Taproom and more

While Whittier is primarily residential, the neighborhood is home to a branch of the Denver Public Library, a few local employers like 5280 Veterinary Care and go-to establishments like Whittier Cafe. This artsy cafe serves coffee and beer from various African countries, and it has become a regular gathering spot for neighbors and activists. Each Sunday, the cafe hosts an East African coffee ceremony, which uses the "jebena," a traditional Ethiopian pot. Nearby, the take-out-only Genna Rae Wings & More offers barbeque flavors with a Caribbean twist, while Point Easy Denver features elevated American fare made with seasonal ingredients. The community's Sweet Sweetz has become the go-to spot for dessert, offering ice cream and peach cobbler. For a drink out, Ephemeral Rotating Taproom is known for offering rare beers and a selection of local food trucks. For groceries, there is a Safeway location just about a mile away.

Whittier Dayz, Whittier Holiday Market and other local events

The Whittier Neighborhood Association hosts and promotes everything from park clean-up days to annual events, including Whittier Dayz. This summer block party features food and kid-friendly activities. There's also HarvestShare, which is held each September. Planned in conjunction with adjacent neighborhoods and nonprofits, HarvestSHARE invites community members and other Denver residents for a day of connection. In the past, activities have ranged from Afro-Cuban drum workshops to a kid zone. The neighborhood also hosts the Whittier Holiday Walking Market each December for residents to support local businesses and buy gifts. The market features a historic home walking tour and a golf cart that drives through Whittier, offering locals cups of hot chocolate. For other events, the adjacent Five Points community hosts the annual summer Five Points Jazz Festival as well as a two-day Juneteenth Music Festival. The parade that kicks off the event dates back to the 1950s, and it goes through Whittier.

From there, students head to B-rated Manual Middle, which features a selection of field trips to everywhere from the Denver Zoo to Washington D.C. Students can finish their secondary education at Manual High, which receives a C rating from Niche. The school features Med School at Manual for those interested in healthcare professions, allowing students to meet professionals and gain certifications.

My parents have lived in my neighborhood for 27 years and I have lived there for entire life. I love my neighborhood because I always feel safe and welcomed wherever I go. We live close to one of the biggest parks and high schools in Denver, Colorado, where I have met many of my best friends. The diversity in my neighborhood has been very inspirational to me while I was growing up and as it increases it will continue to inspire the younger kids as they grow up. With the strong sense of community and support I would not want to live anywhere else.
