A welcoming community
Less than 2 miles north of downtown Des Moines, King Irving is a close-knit urban neighborhood with historic homes and sidewalk-lined streets. This area is perhaps better defined by its community spirit than its economic challenges. "It's a very welcoming, diverse community," says Joann Muldoon, a 35-year resident and treasurer of the King Irving Neighborhood Association. “There's a good community feeling here." Muldoon recalls a conversation she had with a neighbor. “They are immigrants and were living in West Des Moines before moving here,” she says. “They told me they feel more welcome here than they did in Des Moines. It was a good feeling.”
Near major thoroughfares
In addition to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, which is less than 2 miles on back roads, the community has a primary health clinic for those who have trouble affording health care. The neighborhood is on a Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DARTA) bus route, making public transportation easy for residents. With its proximity to Interstate 235 and other area thoroughfares, like the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and Keosauqua Way, King Irving offers easy access to other parts of the city, including Des Moines International Airport, which is a quick drive 5.5-mile drive on the parkway.
Shopping and Dining
A few restaurants can be found on University Avenue, not far from the historic Basilica of St. John. Tacos Mariana’s, known for its tacos, burritos and other Mexican staples. Traveling a little further west into Drake, residents will fine the Drake Diner, an homage to the midcentury eateries, and Lucky Horse Beer & Burgers, where patrons can grab a pint with their burger and watch the game. At Dough Co. Pizza, patrons can order specialty pies, sandwiches and salads. Muldoon shops for groceries at Aldi on University Avenue.
Budget-friendly housing
In King Irving, there's a mix of early 20th-century single-family homes, including bungalows and Foursquares, some updated or fully renovated. Home sizes range from around 700 to 2,200 square feet with two to four bedrooms, and sale prices fall between $43,000 to$320,000. “It’s a very affordable area,” Muldoon says. “It’s a great opportunity for young professionals looking to buy their first home.” Lots are typically 1/8 acre, suitable for a small garden, and many homes either have a driveway or carport for parking.
Head to a park or the library
Despite its urban setting, King Irving has several parks and recreational options. Evelyn K. Davis Park, named after the founder of Des Moines' first inner-city daycare center and local advocate for the underprivileged, is a popular community destination. Within its 10-acre green space, the park features a playground, splash pad, basketball courts, baseball field, sand volleyball court and picnic shelters. Edna Griffin Park, named after the civil rights pioneer and human rights activist, offers benches, basketball courts and an accessible playground. Forest Avenue Library is a very popular community destination, as is the Grubb Community YMCA (soon to be taken over by the city and renamed Reichardt Community Center). which offers fitness classes, swimming lessons, youth sports programs and more.
High school offers AP classes
Area children attend schools in the Des Moines Independent Community School District, which offers open enrollment. Martin Luther King Elementary and Callanan Middle each have C-minus grades from Niche. Roosevelt High School, which has a B score, offers Advanced Placement classes.
Some incidents do occur
It is important to note that the CAP Index in King Irving is 6/10. Violence Interruption Project (VIP) is an initiative approved by the Des Moines City Council in 2021 to address gun violence affecting at-risk youth.
