A place to come back to
At first glance, also known as North De Moines, might not stand out among neighboring communities — just a few pockets of neighborhoods scattered within Saylor Township. But there's something about the neighborhood that brings people back. "I have people who grew up there, and now they come to me and say, 'I want a house in this specific area,'" says Liz Lashier, the broker/owner of NextHome Your Way, who has sold multiple homes here over the years. "I think that people who live there love it because it's just an inclusive neighborhood." Lashier's receptionist, Jesse Alexander, is a former resident. "I grew up there and have great childhood memories," she says. "What I love about it is that it's close to the city, but it's not a city, so as kids, we had freedom to run around." Marquisville's position between Des Moines and Ankney comes with a few distinct benefits and drawbacks. "It has lower taxes, but then a lot of homes are still on septic because they don't have the amenities from either city," Lashier says. Wide streets with mature trees and lush vegetation wind throughout the community, featuring manicured lawns; however, they don't have sidewalks. "Marquisville is not very walkable because it's spread out, and there isn't any place to walk," Lashier says.
Outdoor fun
The 136-acre Margo Frankel Woods State Park is popular for its playgrounds and wooded hiking trails. Fairmont Park offers a playground, a hillside slide, a sledding hill and walking paths. Riverview Park is a destination for walking along the water's edge, and its outdoor amphitheater hosts concerts and festivals.
Treasure-hunting at antique mall
Residents head just outside the neighborhood to pick up groceries at ALDI or Hy-Vee. The Brass Armadillo Antique Mall is is a popular shopping destination, with over 450 dealers inside a 36,000-square-foot showroom. In business since 1905, Goode Greenhouses is the go-to destination for plants and plant products. Smokey D's BBQ is an award-winning go-to eatery known for its burnt ends. Lashier recommends Sunny's Pizza Bistro, a casual Italian restaurant featuring pizza, pasta and sandwiches.
Freeways nearby for easy commutes
Several hospitals are nearby, including UnityPoint Health - Iowa Methodist Medical Center, an 8-mile drive via local streets. Marquisville is situated near interstates 235, 80 and 35, creating an easily accessible network of traffic routes to Downtown Des Moines, all within 10 miles. Public transportation is available via several bus stops; however, many locals prefer to drive. Des Moines International Airport is about a 12-mile drive taking local streets.
New homes are popping up
The community offers diverse housing options, from ranch-style to two-story Colonial revivals, some dating back to the 50s and 60s. Lashier points out that houses of various sizes, some with acre lots, are features many buyers find appealing. Slightly smaller lots of a quarter-acre or half-acre are also common, and most homes have garages. New developments are sprouting up in the northern and southern ends, with a wide range of housing prices. For $179,000, a new home buyer can get a 798-square-foot, two-bedroom bungalow. An $849,000 price tag buys a 2,120-square-foot, five-bedroom, new-construction ranch. The majority of the prices range between $250,000 and $450,000.
High school offers some AP classes
Marquisville is served by the Saydel Community School District and the Des Moines Community School District, both offering open enrollment. Students can start their education at Cornell Elementary School, which has a C-plus from Niche, and move on to Woodside Middle School, which has a C-minus. Saydel High School, which has a C grade, offers a few Advanced Placement classes.
Low chance of crime
Marquisville received a 3 out of 10 on the CAP Index for overall crime, indicating that the likelihood of incidents is low.
